yeh i used to run a 8800gtx on its own last year and it was fine, loved the high res so long as the eye candy wasnt max
depends on the game, give it a go first, if it's not performing well enough then consider getting a new one.
or drop the res down a bit
I'm hoping a 4850 should be enough for half decent 1920x1080 gaming, no?
A 4850 is about the same performance level as a 8800GTX. 4850 being slightly (but probably not noticeably) better
I used to run a stock 8800gtx which was fine for years but when i upgraded my monitor to 24" it did start to show its age, it was fine in 90% of games, as mentioned Crysis being one it didn't like, but then what system doesn't stuggle with that at max settings? Other games suffered a bit of slow down but nothing major. I did eventually upgrade to a XFX260gtx Black Edition though as i do like the eye candy.
My brother runs his 8800 GTS 512MB on a 1920*1200 monitor and has no problems at all in the games he plays (including Crysis) you just have to remember that higher resolution is like increasing the graphics quality settings.
What I mean is that if you can run at 1280*800 on all high detail you may actually get a better image quality from playing at 1680*1050 and medium detail settings. It really annoys me when people say I can run crysis on full with 4x AA at 1024*whatever when they would have much better image quality at a higher res and lower detail settings and or AA.
Oh I also forgot to mention that with LCD monitors playing at non-native resolutions degrades your image quality so if you play at a lower resolution either pick one 4x smaller so that each pixel is converted into 4 pixels or use pixel mapping to ensure that each pixel is related to only a single pixel and the image is not stretched or distorted you will have black lines around the outside of the image though.
Ive also got a 8800GTX and I play every game at 1920x1200 at the highest settings, and so far I havent had any problems. (I haven't played crysis yet)
|| Q9450 @ 3.40Ghz || Maximus Formula X38 || 4GB OCZ PC2-8000 XTC ||
|| 768MB 8800GTX OC || 500GB Seagate || 2TB Western Digital || 24" Dell ||
As all of the 8800GTX owners apart from Crysis and very occasional stuttering in FC2 it does extremely well in all the games I play. Considering its age its a fantastic card.
Space in my skull
Thats good to hear. I'm still waiting for the screen to turn up :/ I may try overclocking the card as I put a HR 03 on it.
If you are going to spend on a HR-03, why not a faster card? Just a thought as I have spent money on cooling for overclocks that does not benefit as much as adding a bit more to get a better card.
this is why my girlfriend has my 24" LCD and I use a 22"
