Hi
Maybe a noob question but haven't looked at Graphics cards for a looong time so here goes...
I am looking to replace my faithful but very aged Radeon 9800Pro AGP card with an HD4830 but as my Asrock Dual SATA2 mobo states PCI Express x16 and x1 would this work and can a PCI Express 2.0 work on such spec mobos?
I know that I shall have to upgrade mobo/cpu/ram at some stage but can't afford that yet.
All help appreciated. :)
PCI-E 2.0 is backwards compatible so you'll have no problem running it on your PCI-E x16 board. :)

I have since found my CPU is a limiting factor so now have to upgrade :O_o1:
I am therefore considering upgrading from AMD 3800+ Venice single core to E5200 but what Ram/Mobo is recommended as I intend to overclock on stock voltages? Also, given my choice for HD4830 graphics card (don't know how HDCP will stop me viewing films btw) what psu is recommended too (HIper 525W currently)

Just a thought...are you sure thouse GPU's are compat with the mobo, as your current GPU is AGP, and they are PCI e x16
Memory and motherboard wise I'd be looking at a branded 2GB or 4GB PC6400 set with (if you're on a budget) a Gigabyte or (if there's more money to spend) a DFI / Biostar board.Quote:

As I say, looking to take fsb on mobo to 266Mhz and get a nice 3.34Ghz clock on stock cooler but would consider third party cooler if it is much better. Do the timings on Ram make much difference too and having DDR2 ram as clockable in this setup as DDR3?

As for an aftermarket cooler I would go for one doesn't need to be expensive a Xigmatek S693 will give you quiet efficient cooling for less than £20 if you have a bit more to spend then a Thermalright Ultima 90 with a quiet 92mm or 120mm fan will cost you £30 (£25 for the cooler and £5 for the fan), it is however a better cooler and comes with a backplate and boltdown kit (worth the extra just not to have push pins in my opinion!).
The other alternative to the Intel system is AMD, get a Biostar 790GX board ~£70 and the X2 7750 BE for ~£65 at stock settings AMD wins hands down performance wise against an E5200, if you are going to heavily overclock then the E5200 will take the lead because it can clock so much further.
Thanks for the info. Living non-mainland UK puts delivery up to £13 + VAT but you're right, 4830 cheapest.
Would be looking at Arctic Freezer 64 Pro as cooler as used a couple of these and very satisfied.
Will look at AMD offering but would like to take E5200 up to 3.32Ghz (12.5 x 266Mhz). Heat is a concern at the moment so E5200 looks attractive on 45nm process.
