    Gtx 295

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Index.aspx?NT=1-0-17-604-0

    Now available.

HUGE price at the moment, not enough performance boost over 4870X2 to warrent the price differential for me. I shall be waiting for the next generation NV212 in 2-3 months (hopefully)

    Re: Gtx 295

The GTX 295 is clearly extremely powerful but its too expensive. Only really worth considering if your playing games at 2560x1600, but even then the 4850X2 is sufficient and better value.

I do game at 2560*1600 (for a couple of years now), I'll still hold out for a card that's significantly faster than my 8800GTX, at these high prices it's important to choose the right card as it's likely to need to last a couple of years!

Exactly, and with DX11 hardware round the corner Kick yourself later > Kick yourself now.

You do realise that at 1920*1200 a 4870X2 is about 40% faster than an 8800GTX don't know the difference at 2560*1600 but would guess its even bigger, while I'm not saying get one waht sort of speed improvement are you waiting for?

Curious, what games are you playing? I only play "old" games like CNC3 and WoW but they barely run at 2560x1600 on an overclocked 4870x2. My old 8800GTX did well up to 1600x1200, noticeably struggled at 1920x1200 and had no chance at 2560x1600. Sure, if you turn all the pretty things off but then what's the point of having such a high resolution?

The 8800GTX plays almost everything (I'm thinking crysis here!) at decent speeds. Team Fortress 2 is my main game, that runs at 2560*1600 (I think with AA, can't remember) and is always well over 50FPS. L4D runs 34-50 with everything maxed. Basically I'd like more oomphh for warhead and crysis, I have to crank the detail right down on warhead, if I switch everthing to the max I get 3-4FPS, understandably!

I upgraded from an 8800GTX to a 4870x2 and the difference is phenomenal for 2560x1600 gaming.

Yes, Crysis will still not play at max detail without dropping to 15-20fps but you are unlikely to find another card like the 8800GTX, it seems it was an oddball in how long in lasted in the market, the chances of another card having the same longevity at the top is slim to FA.

That was because nvidia went all stupid and released the top card of said generation and then spent time releasing the rest of the generation.

That's the crucial question, the performance at 2560*1600, it's often a million miles away from 1920*1200. The last upgrade I did was from sli 7800GT to the 8800GTX, quite a massive leap in performance. I was hanging out for the same jump in performance, but I don't see that from this generation of card.....It'd be nice to have a single GPU card with a couple of GB of RAM to handle to higher resolutions.......we shall see.

Agreed it's one of the few bits of kit I've bought that I didn't regret 6 months later (that and the 30" screen, as you will probably agree with )

I was tempted by the 4870X2 last year but it was simply too expensive for the amount of gaming that I do. The GTX280 at £250 is looking more attractive now......interesting times ahead.

    Re: Gtx 295

I find it funny the way nvidia belittled the 4870x2 saying people didn't want dual gpu cards and then go and release this, the main reason seems to be that the 4870x2 was faster than the gtx280.

    Re: Gtx 295

compared to my 260GTX the only really noticeable difference is in Crysis when playing on my PC @ 1920 x 1200.

think i will be RMA'ing the card as its not worth the $$$ unless you are playing at 2560 or must have the latest toy
