Re: 4850X2 still to noisy
tried using the 7V adaptor?
Re: 4850X2 still to noisy
This may seem a little strange but have you considered 2x Thermalright HR03's? or a HR-03 and whatever else you may like. Becasue of the way it works one could wrap around the card while the other (or whatever cooler you fancied) would sit on the face of the card. It will take up a lot of room but they are fantastic coolers and will easily tame a 4850X2.
Here are some images of a HR-03 Rev-A (you would probably want the GT version I expect) on my X1950XT in wrap around mode click the Thumbs to get a bigger view :)

Re: 4850X2 still to noisy
Are you connecting the zalman coolers directly to the psu or are you using a fan controller? If they were connected directly, then they would be running at full speed which I imagine would be quite loud.
Re: 4850X2 still to noisy
Shadowmaster the issue with the Zalman's was not that they were load as well but that they didn't cool as well as the stock cooler.

 I missed the graph at the end of the page so I assumed it was noise (dont know why).
Re: 4850X2 still to noisy
Great work with the mod. Unfortunate it didn't work as well as you hoped, but good work all the same!

I tried both actually, Still wasn't as loud as the stock cooler but didn't shift the heat at the high end
Re: 4850X2 still to noisy
Just so you know you will need to buy a fan to go with each cooler 92mm fits perfectly 120mm can be attached with a little ingenuity.
You will want to make sure that you have room for the cooler on the backside of the card (that it does not interfere with your CPU or northbridge coolers or if on the other core that it wont touch your memory. From what I can remember (been a while since I used it) it was fine on my G33m-DS2R but the fan was vert close to the CPU cooler this should be less of an issue for you as you have a slot above the cooler which I don't have (if that makes sense, my PCIE slot is the closest one to the CPU).
Oh if you have a HR03 on the front of the card it will with a fan use 3 slots see image below for what i mean.

(sorry about the size if I can find the original I will update with a better image.)
So it may be preferable to find a different cooler for the other core, perhaps the Thermalright T-Rad² again you would need to check compatabilty with the cores to make sure the was room for it to fit.
Check Thermalright's site for dimensions and drawings http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_pa...ga_cooler.html
This is an example of an HR03 REV A and a Thermalright V2 on a 4870X2 http://translate.google.com/translate?langpair=auto|en&u=http://bbs.chiphell.com/viewthread.php?tid=30957&highlight=4870%2Bx2
No idea if the core spacing is similar or not (I know the 4850X2 is slightly longer so the maybe a bit more space between the cores (which will only make it easier) again all the sizes will be on Thermalright's site :) Oh and don't forget to take account of the PCIE Bridge chips heat sink which I believe is epoxied on so you can't change it :(
Re: 4850X2 still to noisy
bloody heck :surprised: to put two of thoes on a card it's going to take up half the case.
You may also get weight issues.
Shame the zalmans didn't work :( well at least we now know the limit of the ageing VF900-Cu
It might almost be worth seeing if you can get a couple of cpu coolers on there instead.
How about tring to get a couple of thermalright Ultima90 on there, you have to custom build a bolt through kit and you can pritty much forget about putting anything below the card but it sould work.

The was a reason I suggested that he only use one :p
I think retro fitting a pair of Ultimas would be very cool but probably even more impractical than 2 HR-03s ;)
You could always watercool it ;) might be a touch pricey though compared to a couple of coolers,
For just the graphics,
2x Swiftech MCW60's ~£60
1x DB-1 Pump ~£30
1x 360mm XSPC RS360 radiator ~£35
Tubing, fittings and fixings ~£15
Feser One fluid ~£6
3x Quiet fans (Yate Loon lows) ~£15
Total cost ~£160
Maybe a little off course though and certainly more expensive than a couple of air coolers.
Re: 4850X2 still to noisy
Well he's got the problem of trying to find 2 coolers that will fit.
two VF900-Cu was the obsious choise.
The other is the ZeroThrem GX815
http://www.zerotherm.net/eng/product/GX815.asp
but I've no idea where to get them.
Two ultima90's should fitas they are relitively narrow, probably get a 92mm between them but the will stick down 139mm :/
Actually on the cpu cooler idea how about two of the CF900 ?

Thanks for that link for the 4870X2, is it just me, or has that guy underclocked the gpu\'s?
It looks to me like that the gpu\'s on the 4850x2 are slightly spaced further appart

Hmm, hadn't thought about using cpu coolers on a gpu, seems a bit ridiculous though. I did see on hexus that zalman where bringing out a dual perpose gpu/cpu cooler that looks like a replacement for the VF900-Cu. could wait and give that a try I suppose

I've always tried to avoid water cooling, just seems like a very complex way of cooling a system, and if you're going through all that trouble, why not shoot for sub-ambient cooling, TECs anyone?
