Display crashes - but computer doesn't!

Hello all, I'm having an odd problem.

Running Vista 64, with an Nvidia 7900gt with most recent official drivers. My monitor is a ViewSonic VX2235vm, which shows up in my device manager, so its not missing EDID.

So, if I logout, or change resolutions, lock the computer and unlock it, the display gets all corrupted.

BUT, the computer doesn't crash, the event viewer shows no errors.

I can still access my computer using my VNC remote viewer, and using that I can see that the computer is still running normally - my desktop shows up, and I can still do anything through the VNC viewer.

I'm pretty good with computers for someone who does not work with them professionally, but I don't know what to do.

Any suggestions? If you need more info from me, please ask.

I would have to say revert to an older set of drivers and see if it happens still if it does then it is obviously a hardware issue if it doesn't then either the drivers were not installed properly (for whatever reason, sometimes it just happens) or you just found a glitch in them

Sounds a bit like the problem I have with windows 7 beta see here http://forums.hexus.net/operating-sy...ue-7900gt.html

Is your 7900gt factory overclocked, if so try underclock it to stock. If you've not got the option to change the core and mem speeds download NVIDIA nTune (the 2nd link on the thread above). Set the 7900GT to stock speed of Core 450Mhz/Mem 660Mhz, fingers crossed you should be able to change resolutions without the display corrupting.

I can save any changes I make, and the PC boot up into the saved resolution/refresh rate, but the card boots to the factory overclocked setting (Core 500Mhz/Mem 750Mhz) so I need to amend these before I change the screen settings. I've not play any games on win7, but i would assume if I played a game that changed the screen resolution I'd need to underclock the card first.
