Best GPU for up to ~£230

I have a budget of up to ~£230, which GPU do you think would be the best for this sort of money?

Cheers

Re: Best GPU for up to ~£230

I have a 22" HD monitor, so 1920x1080, core i7 920, 3Gb corsair dominator 1600Mhz ram, Gigabyte UD5 mobo, nochua cooler. I havent bought a power supply yet, I would like one that could handle another of the GPU's I choose - any ideas for that too? I was thinking a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750. I've seen posts of people running 2x280's with that so it should have enough juice

XFX GTX 260 Black is looking good at your price range but obviously if you can find a reduced 280 that would be even better. Overclockers reduced their stock but they all went fast. Just waiting for the next online vendor to do the same.

pick up an EVGA 55nm GTX260 SSC, or a stock/SC version if you want to save some money. (its £236)

Excellent card. An old GTX280 on offer would likely perform better on that resolution though.

a few 280GTX's floating around near to that price new, which is worth trying to get over the 260 IMO.

Re: Best GPU for up to ~£230

If we discount any absolute bargains (like a 4850X2 or GTX280 for £230) then you have in my opinion 5 options they are in no particular order,

GTX260 55nm £213 http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...html?EVG-GTX26
HD4870 1GB £193 http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...html?SAP-48701
HD4870 512MB £165 http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s....html?NOV-4870
2x HD4850 512MB £230 http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s....html?NOV-4850
2x HD4830 512MB £180 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/151452

Bang for buck wise the smart money is with the 4830's in crossfire then probably the 4850's in crossfire (better on average than a GTX280) then it probably doesn't really matter I probably would not go for the 512MB 4870 at your resolution the additional memory the 1GB offers will come in handy.

You could spend a little more on the 4850's to get quieter coolers but it will raise the price well above the £230, the 4830 coolers tend to be good as they are almost exclusively after market the is also a fair amount of choice of 4830's at £90 (at least 3 on eBuyer alone).
