3870 + S1 black screen on boot
hey guys, just tried moving my Accelero S1 from my x1950. I'm having a little trouble, about 5 seconds in to the boot process (during POST i think) the card stops outputting a signal.
I've refitted the S1 3 times now and keep getting the same results. I don't think it's the cooler, everything seems to fit well.
Ideas? Thinkin i must have broken the card somehow.
Re: 3870 + S1 black screen on boot
might have got thermal paste where it shouldnt be, that or you creamed the card.
i take it you reseated it already ?
try backing off the screws a little on the heatsink incase you warped the card as well.
Re: 3870 + S1 black screen on boot
I used some Akasa thermal tape to try and avoid getting paste where it shouldn't be. Is it possible the tape just isn't heavy duty enough? It does seem a little thin...
Will try easing off the screws and will then report back
Re: 3870 + S1 black screen on boot
nah tape may not be perfect but it wouldnt stop it booting, just overheating in game !
Re: 3870 + S1 black screen on boot
no luck:(
Gonna try the stock cooler again. If that doesn't work then it's going back to PC World tomorrow.
Re: 3870 + S1 black screen on boot
well at least that will be a quick rma
Re: 3870 + S1 black screen on boot
yip,it's borked
gonna be an interesting conversation tomorrow, it was a clearance line so i bet i come home with the 40 quid i paid for it rather than another card. Here's betting i brake my 1950 when i refit the cooler too...
Re: 3870 + S1 black screen on boot
x1950 XTX installed and working! In all honesty i'm not sure i really want/need another 3870, it was nice to have but it's not hugely faster than this card. The only thing i'll really miss is sound output over HDMI. A processor upgrade is a bit more pressing, and after that i'll think about a new GPU (passive out of the box this time :p)
Re: 3870 + S1 black screen on boot
Was the HD3870 working before you replaced the cooler??
Re: 3870 + S1 black screen on boot
x1950 has died now. This really isn't my week! It started freezing up in 3D apps yesterday, i stripped it, cleaned it and refitted the cooler (to make sure it wasn't overheating). Temps in the 40's yet the system locks under 3D :(
This "bargain" on the 3870 is turning out to be a royal disaster! Everything was fine a week ago. Looks like i'm upgrading the GPU afterall, will search around and see what sort of deals i can get. Unfortunately i've missed a Dell i7 deal by a few days (free delivery, £85 off and another 15% off) otherwise i'd be awaiting delivery of a new system right now :(

Don't worry I had a crap day too! Managed to drop my HD3870 when cleaning out the dust from inside my case. One of the small surface mounted components fell off and I will have to see if I can re-solder it back on at some point. However I have to assume I have now borked the card!! :( The worse thing it was a decent overclocker too (877mhz easily from the standard 777mhz) and I bought it at the time it was first released (November 2007). I am using my old x1900gt now. Sadly I cannot afford to buy a new card now for a while as I don't have the spare cash and I would like to keep my newly acquired Q6600 too! :( Hopefully I will have some cash by summer to buy a new rv790 card or maybe I will wait until the new DX11 cards are released at the end of the year! :(
Re: 3870 + S1 black screen on boot
Ahh, bugger dude! I guess it's had a fairly good run though, just a shame it didn't last until there was a worthwhile upgrade...
On the front of bad days i think i may just win though :p We've got a CO leak in our house for the second night running! I miss sleep :ill: I got an hour last night by the time the gas board arrived, hope i get a couple tonight! I start work at 6:30! :surprised:
Popped on here looking for a bit of advice really. Been looking at upgrades, here's my current system;
AMD BE-2300 (Can reach 2.5GHz on stock cooling. Not tried aftermarket yet though)
2GB OCZ PC2-6400 (ordered another 2 last night)
Sapphire x1950XTX (kinda, it's now a 2D only card :p)
Biostar TF-560 A2+ Motherboard
What should i look at upgrades-wise? I've been looking at quite a few different set-ups, from a 7750 Black Edition paired with a 4830 (roughly £180 with an aftermarket CPU cooler) to a Phenom II 940 with a 4870 (£350-ish). The 7750 + 4830 combo seems like one heck of a bargain for the price, but is there any point in going from a 1.9GHz, 1mb L2 K8 to a 2.7GHz K10?
If not then things start to get tricky. Ruling out the 7750 seems to pretty much rule out the tri-cores as well, the lower ones cost more and barely outperform the dual core chip and the upper ones (along with all the X4's) are going to get trounced by the Phenom IIs over the next month or two. I'd be suprised if there isn't a PHII below the £140 mark by March...
Graphics cards seem a bit simpler, 4830 or 4850 for gaming at 1440x900. 4870 if i can afford it (to drive the 1080p TV and to future proof against me buying a new monitor in the next 18-months).
Re: 3870 + S1 black screen on boot
Well the Phenom II 920 is £160 at Scan already! It seems that your motherboard does not support the Phenom II 920 and 940 as they are 125w designs. It can support the older 95w Phenoms. Perhaps some 95w Phenom II processors will come out in the next few months?
I would say the following seems like a good upgrade:
1.) Phenom II 920 ~£160
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=924551
2.) J & W 790GX motherboard ~ £85 or an Asus 780G~ £60
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/JandW...Board-Graphics
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus-...-RAID-uATX-VGA
Both support 125w Phenom II processors. The J & W 790gx is supposed to be good for overclocking.
3.) HD4850 ~£120 or a HD4830 ~ £90
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146705
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/151452
Depending on what PSU you currently have you may need to get a new one for around £50.
I would not go for the 940 unless you are really into overclocking. So for tha basic upgrade(Phenom 920 +780g + HD4830) you are looking at around £310.
Re: 3870 + S1 black screen on boot
Yeah, i just discovered that mobo issue myself :( It was pretty unexpected!
What's your opinion of Crossfiring a couple of 4830's? Been seing some impressive results and it breaks up the cost a bit. Could order one tomorrow and then look at the CPU and Mobo when AMD have rolled out their new chips a bit more (in the hope that prices settle). If the solo 4830 isn't enough i can pop another one in without losing anything (price and performance seem comprable to the 4870/GTX260) apart from a higher power draw (my electric is included in my rent so i'm really not fussed, as long as a Corsair HX-520 can take the strain). If i don't need it then i've saved myself from over buying. The further my money will stretch now the happier i'll be in 12 months time when i'm a skint student
Maybe Scan will drag up something good this weekend. A few more quid off the Phenom IIs seems likely as a weekend only deal, if there's a good mobo bundle then i might well buy :)
Re: 3870 + S1 black screen on boot
It depends on what games you are playing as not all of them scale well with crossfire. However HD4830 graphics cards are known to be good overclockers too! :)
I may even just go for the RV740(the RV730 successor) which is being launched(hopefully) in March . It is rumoured to be a 40nm GPU with 640 stream processors like the HD4830 but with 128bit memory access(the HD4830 has 256bit memory access). However it is supposed to use GDDR5 RAM and have higher clocks than the HD4830!! This would mean potential better performance than a HD4830 with lower power consumption!! Of course this speculation has to be confirmed but if is priced around the same level as the current HD4670(RV730) it would be great!! :)
