What's better than an 8800GTX?
Well, lots of cards are, obviously, but I want something that's going to give me a decent improvement over my current 8800GTX and last for a good while yet.
System is...
E6850
4GB RAM
Asus P5K mobo
24-inch monitor
1TB HDD
The rest of my system is pretty solid, but I play at 1920x1200 and a few games recently have started turning into a slideshow. Would like to change the GPU now, with the aim of upgrading the rest of the PC toward the end of the year. Had some unfortunate experiences with ATi cards in the past so I'd prefer NVIDIA, but if there's a particularly good Radeon then I'll take a look.
Any recommendations?
Re: What's better than an 8800GTX?
A GTX260(the later one with 216 shaders) or a GTX280?? Definitely a GTX295 but that is insane money!!
An HD4870 1GB will be faster than a 8800GTX too.
The 8800GTX is a classic card just as the 9700pro was too!! :)
Re: What's better than an 8800GTX?
How does the GT260 compare against the 4870?
Re: What's better than an 8800GTX?
It depends on the games. The best thing is to check the reviews for the 216 shader version of the GTX260 first. The recent drivers have also improved performance of the Nvidia GTX series.
Re: What's better than an 8800GTX?
Wait a few months longer I'd say. Still a solid card, even for a 24" monitor I'd have thought.

Maybe worth doing that as some newer 40nm cards are coming out from Nvidia and ATI in the next 6 months. It depends if you can be bothered to wait or not!! :)
Re: What's better than an 8800GTX?
I'll wait, then. Might gut it and clean out the dust in the mean time, bit of a spring clean before I upgrade.
Re: What's better than an 8800GTX?
I have a 8800GTX and haven't even given consideration to upgrading, i play the recent games @ 1920x1200 on a 24" TFT without noticing any significant drop in FPS. Settings generally set up high too. I would wait until something else needs upgrading.
Re: What's better than an 8800GTX?
I did consider upgrading from a 8800gtx, but after looking into it, it's not worth it atm. The only real cards where you will see a massively noticable difference are the GTX295 and HD4870x2. The 8800GTX can still hold it's own, and am yet to find a game that is unplayable. I think it's going to be a while before the 8800 series owners want to upgrade, because atm, there's nothing that's really worthwhile.

Perhaps reinstalling the drivers may help too for newer games!!
Re: What's better than an 8800GTX?
I'd say don't just throw a new gpu at the porblem, start with a full windows clean up.
anti-virus scan, anti-spyware, hard drive clean up and defrag.
check cpu and memory load when playing games
Re: What's better than an 8800GTX?
If your motherboard supports it why not buy a second GTX from fleabay you can get one for under £100.

So that would be a no then :P
Re: What's better than an 8800GTX?
4870 is faster and cheaper card, probably best at that res, the 260 however is a very decent card can keep up with the 4870 and has better drivers than the ati counterpart...oh and its an nvidia lol
Re: What's better than an 8800GTX?
Well, it looks like my 8800 is dead. Switched PC on today and the graphics were all corrupted, rebooted and Windows wouldn't start. Swapped it out for another card I had and all is okay.
So...should I get a 4870, NVIDIA 260 or just another 8800GTX?

The 8800GTX has be end of life for some time, and there really is no point getting out of date tech.
If I were you right now, I'd get the 4850 X2 probably. Excellent price performance:
