Palit 4850 512MB aftermarket cooling options?

I have a Palit 4850 512MB (scan: LN24578) and while its nice and cool, it's the loudest thing in my case and I'm wondering if I can use a different cooler or if I'm stuffed as its a non reference design?

Re: Palit 4850 512MB aftermarket cooling options?

Are the mounting holes around the GPU different spacing to the reference model then? Standard spacing is ~75mm measured my X1950XT but cant find my steel ruler :S so had to use the tape measure. If they are you are out of luck unless you want to watercool and fancy a bit of a modding session to make a block fit

The alternative (which is what I did to a 9800GT with the same cooler) is to ziptie a quiet 92mm fan on top of the current cooler, it will take up another slot but will solve the noise problem (obviously unplug the current fan from the card).

ALso worth noting that Palit/Xpertvision put warranty stickers over the fixing screws for the cooler so if you take it off you will void your warranty and they will be able to tell.

Mine didn't have any stickers, apart from one on the end of the PCB, the 4 screws for the sink were uncovered

Oh that may be alright then the 9800GT I refeered to did so I assumed that was what Palit did.

Oh and I forgot to mention that 75mm is diagonal distance not an edge.

Re: Palit 4850 512MB aftermarket cooling options?

If it will fit then great but the question that still needs to be answered is if the mounting holes for the Palit card are the standard 75mm corner to corner or not if they are then any aftermarket cooler (within reason, other tall components for example may get in the way although it is unlikely) will fit, if not then as I said before the options will be limited to modding something to fit.

Re: Palit 4850 512MB aftermarket cooling options?

Well, I got my ruler our this morning and it does appear that the holes are 75mm apart! But does have a warranty sticker on one of the screws

I had a good look around the card and it did appear that there is plenty of room around the mounting holes - my only other query is PCB length and a non reference layout for a Accelero Twin Turbo. I would guess the X1300's were a similar size to X300's and therefore it should fit?

I do like the idea of using a 92mm fan + cable ties until the warranty has expired and then getting something better...

Re: Palit 4850 512MB aftermarket cooling options?

If you can afford to loose the the slot that the fan will take up it is the easiest solution.

When I did it I used an Akasa Amber 92mm fan 1400rpm they are basically silent (or at least very very quiet) you will not hear it over the noise of other fans and hard drives. They cost ~£4.50 from Scan but with postage will get quite pricey

Check other etailers like QuietPC, Specialtech and ChilledPC they all offer delivery via royal mail so for a low cost item like a fan it is a lot more cost effective.

I got enough spare fan's to start a wind tunnel

I do have an 80mm version of those Amber's but I do wonder if it would shift enough air to make me happy. Time to have a play

Webby, how did the 92mm Akasa Amber cool against the standard fan?

Re: Palit 4850 512MB aftermarket cooling options?

It was slightly better I think under full load using Furmark it was hovering around 60°C remember that was on a 9800GT though not a 4850, I would check for you but that machine is long gone off to whoever it was that it was built for (my Dad builds and maintains PCs (mainly maintenance), I get called in when things go wrong or need sorting out like loud fans which don't respond to software fan control or BIOS flashes...) anyway since I have not heard that it has gone wrong I guess it is still happily spinning away

The other thing to consider is if it's a non-standard layout.
While the holes for the cooler may be correct the gpu may be mor forward on the card, makeing some cooler still not fit.

    Just something to consider.

Re: Palit 4850 512MB aftermarket cooling options?

Webby: If I could thank you I would, but I cant, but thanks! It would be nice to get something a little quieter than what I have on there at the moment! (cheap ebuyer generic fan!) Temps are good.

Pob255: I had wondered that too, but the 92mm fan + cable ties seems to be working very well and its less of a warranty issue!

    Good man
I do like to see people making stuff, rather than just buying something off the shelf, even if it just strap a fan to it.

Re: Palit 4850 512MB aftermarket cooling options?

Yeah that heatsink is perfectly sized for a 92mm fan and it really isn't a bad design its just the noise the stock fan makes could make your ears bleed!

Anyway glad it is doing better now than at stock, the Akasa Amber is a lovely fan they have Ball Bearing rather than sleeve bearing (which is why they are a little more expensive) as well which helps when mounted horizontally, I currently have one cooling my graphics memory and mosfets (well blowing air in their general direction at least) and it is silent turn off all the other fans and you can not hear it (or at least I can't and my hearing is good enough).
