    4870 1GB or GTX 280?

I'm in great need of a new graphics card as my 7800GT finally packed in the other day. I also just bought a Dell 23" 1080 monitor, so from what I understand 1GB is necessary in some of the newer games out at the moment..

I was pretty much set on the 4870, but have just noticed the lottery giveaway of GTX 280's at OCUK - do I push the boat out and get one, or stick with the 4870?!

I better be quick with my decision, only 6 GTX's left! :O

    Cheers

    Re: 4870 1GB or GTX 280?

The GTX280 is the better card by a big margin only you can decide if you are happy buying a unknown manufacturers card/OEM with 1 year warranty (probably, have not checked) from a company notorious for poor customer service.

Oh and if you decide to go for a 4870 1GB £183 is a pretty good price for one http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...html?NOV-48701

If your budget stretches to £250 will get you a 4850X2 which beats the GTX280 but that is a big step up in price.

    Re: 4870 1GB or GTX 280?

Cheers for the reply. I believe what OCUK are doing is distributing the remaining cards randomly - I checked their forum and people have been receiving all different brands. That is why I'm quite hesitant about doing it - don't wanna end up with a crappy card with 1 year warranty as you mentioned.

I think I'll stick with the 4870 1GB, I really would love an X2 but I'm already pushing my budget way too much

The only other thing stopping me from buying one now is the temps of the 4870, from what I've heard they get quite hot?

I've been looking at a 'Scythe Musashi Dual Fan Graphics Card Cooler', has anyone had past experience with this, or more importantly, do I really need to worry about the temperature of the 4870 during load?

    Cheers

    Re: 4870 1GB or GTX 280?

My Powercolor (considered a budget brand by many) 4870 1gb hits 54degC after a few hours of gaming, not noticed a higher temp. Albeit I have pretty good airflow in my Antec 900 case.

Only running at 1680x1060 though, not sure what a higher res would do for for the temps I'm afraid.

    Re: 4870 1GB or GTX 280?

Unless you're overclocking it, it shouldn't be a problem. HIS do a good line of IceQ cards which have a aftermarket cooler which is very good. They are more expensive though.

I believe this is good, too: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1Gb-S...MHz-PCIE-2xDVI

Rather than me starting a new thread on this topic, i thought i should continue here.....

Is the 260 better than the 4870? I was under the impression that the 4870 was slightly better?

    Re: 4870 1GB or GTX 280?

all depends on the games you play some prefer the 4870 and some prefer the 260 although with the new drivers its all pretty level. I went for the GTX 260 because i use adobe stuff a lot and it has enhancements for hardware acceleration of GPUs which apparently is better on NVidia cards

    I personally prefer Nvidia too.

I'm hearing mixed reports on XFX these days? Should i go with someone else?

    Re: 4870 1GB or GTX 280?

ATI's Stream will help with GPGPU tasks soon. This should significantly increase folding ability, too - where ATI cards have fallen behind in the past. Pity there's still no standard GPGPU framework, though...

Edit: sorry, I posted this without refreshing the page - I was replying to post #7

Personally, yes i would although others may feel differently. I keep seeing the SSC on today only (along with a couple of 280s which might be worth checking out )so if you order today you will get it for 224

remember these cards can ge pretty hungry on power draw so you may wanna check your PSU specification make sure it has strong 12v rails and enough wattage

    Re: 4870 1GB or GTX 280?

It will be fine but with a couple of hard drives, overclocked cpu etc you will start to push towards the top limit of the PSU. My Xclio 550W often has to have the fan spin up which can be quite irritating
