How about this overclock?

I am very new to all this so I am not sure how "good" of an overclock is this.

I got an Asus 4850 running at core clock: 625 and speed clock: 993. I overclocked it through the AMD Overdrive utility up to 800 core and 1158 speed.

It wouldn't go over that through the utility but I'm not sure if there is any other way to push it further.

I did a Sisoft Sandra test and the throughput at the Video (GFX) Rendering increased from 145,563 to 186,067 KPixels/s.

What is the throughput of a 4870 at stock speeds? (Sisoft has some comparison data but I'm not sure how correct they are).

that's a fairly hefty overclock ... what the temps like, and how stable is it for games, artefacts?

Haven't tested it in games yet but I will do so soon. During the testing (Sisoft) at max load it reached about 74c temps, but I had all the fans on full (Antec 1200).

So, did you just arbitrarily dial it up to those speeds, or did you do it slowly and test for artifacts and check temps on the way up? If it's the former, then you'll risk breaking the card.

Edit: Oh, I see the temps were pretty good. :) Just make sure the card isn't artifacting.

I did it through the AMD Overdrive utility which automatically steps up the freqs slowly until it comes to a "failed" test (whatever that is based on the OVerdrive util).

I'll test it in games and report back!

Use Furmark to load the card - I hear that heats the GPU more than most other benchies. Try ATItool to check for artifacts.

If you use furmark you will need to rename the benchmark file form Furmark.exe to anythng you like ATI "fixed" the drivers so that it throttles 48** cards during the benchmark to stop people bricking their cards.

Anyway the Catalyst control centre auto overclock thing does not really test the overclock very efficiently I will be quite surprised if when playing games it didn't artefact after a while.

Like Watercooled suggests use FUrmark to test temps (it will get hot) and then ATItool or ati tray tools to check for artefacts.

Thank you all for the info. I will read more and try these tools. One quick question though, you mentioned that I need to rename the .exe to run Furmark as it has lead to some people bricking their cards. Is there a danger bricking my card simply by running Furmark? Or the danger is possible if I set a very high overclock and afterwards run the benchmark?

No it was a problem people could have if they were not paying attention to temperatures and had cases with particularly poor airflow or had perhaps turned the auto fan control off, things like that. I don't think anybody actually did kill a card but the possibility is their so ATI modded the drivers to hopefully prevent it, and the potential RMAs that would follow.

Anyway temperature wise we would be talking 120°C+ before it was even becoming a minor issue so I doubt you have anything to worry about, Furmark also has a temperature monitor during stability testing so you can keep an eye on the temps and stop the test if you get uncomfortable.

YOu can also use the furry cube in ATITool or the spaceship in ATT to load the card furmark just seems to give the most load possible so if your stable with that then your good to go :) need to leave it running for a bit though (like an hour maybe to simulate gaming).

Oh ATT will also allow you to overclock past 800 if your card can manage it ;) Altough I would be quite surprised most people can not get 4850's stable at 800 without a vold mod, which I will not go into right now.
