1920x1200 or 1920x1080?

Hi,

I am looking to get a new 24 inch tft primarily for pc use, I do not game but do like to watch movies?
I have looked at various monitors and most are the standard 1200 but the iiyama prolite 24 is 1080. I am just wondering in terms of real use what the difference is?

1080 is meant to be true HD, I run my 24 inch in 1920x1080 and it feels the same as when I used my 19 inch in 1440x900 tbh

The extra Pixels are useful for displaying multiple windows on one desktop, but some don't like them as if you have a 16:9 source (e.g widescreen movie), then you have black bars at the poles, but with a 16:10 source it is fine for videos :)

Well, if your going to watch films, it would kinda make sense to go for the 1080 line display......

BUT....at 24" you are going to need to sit with your nose touching the screen to tell any difference at all, in fact from any decent distance you would find it difficult to discern between a 576 line DVD and a 1080 line BluRay image on a screen that small.

Bottom line is it probably doesn't matter, just get the screen with the best image quality.

Ahh ok, I thought the other way round with the 1200 you get the bars top and bottom. fair enough sounds like 1200 would be better then.

Any reccomendations?
I was looking at the samsung T240 v the iiyama prolite 24 but I am open to suggestions :)

Yes I mainly plug my tv in when I am watching movies but this isn't full hd so I thought if my monitor was that would be an option, i could go to a 26' but I thought with TN panels it was advisable not to go too big?

Thats because you would be correct :D

As you have 4 sides, top, bottom, left and right. I just can't think what to call the combined top and bottom without saying poles of the monitor, aah well, changed it to poles so it is clearer :)

gaming - 1920 x 1200
movies - 1920 x 1080

based on you wanting to watch films, i'd go for the 1080 monitor.
Dell do quite a nice one for around £200 aswell, i think.

It's a matter of "horses for courses"

My point was that f your into films, then buy a 37"+ plasma/lcd that is designed for the job. If you are buying a PC monitor to watch films, then compromises have to be made.....and TBH, it really isn't going to make much difference at all whether its a 1200 or 1080 line display.....your either going to be sat too close to enjoy it or far enough away that you can't tell the difference anyway.

So, my recommendation (if the main use of the monitor is to watch films and you already have a PC monitor)......save for a decent TV instead.

Aye, a 24 inch is nice to watch films on but its still nowere near as good as watching it on a proper TV

I do have a 32' tv which is hooked up to the pc via hdmi. this monitor is primarily for pc use as stated but movies are a possibility is all. Thanks

Personally I would say get the best monitor you can picture wise and don't really worry about the vertical resolution, if general PC work is the order of the day then the extra 120 vertical pixels really do not make a huge amount of difference (much less so than horizontal pixels which are useful for having multiple documents open side by side).

So my recommendation is get the monitor that best fits your budget and personal preference in terms of style.

Oh and if you want something even higher resolution then Dell and Samsung (cheaper) both have a 2048*1152 so even more horizontal pixels and a a few more or less (depending where you start from) vertical ones.

I think you should go for one that'll let you connect powered speakers to it. Or, connect powered speakers via your PC's soundcard.

Is that for PC gaming? Does playing in HD res distort PC games in anyway?

Btw, the monitor you linked to looks good for the price but lacks DVI/HDMI.
