Palit 4830 - Trouble O/Cing it
Hi,
Recently purchased a PALIT HD 4830 , but having some serious issues trying to get software to overclock it.
Catalyst drivers will only allow a 50MHz overclock, which is way below what i believe the system can do.
Tried ATI Tray, ATI Tool, AMD GPu Clock, but Tray and Tool Crash when loading, and AMD GPU clock kicks raises an error.
I'm not sure if it's because of a driver/resource conflict, since i'm running on a nVidia 6150 MCP chipset with AMD 3800X2, or if it's a limitation of the PALIT custom designed board.
Any ideas?
Thanks!:help:

its a gamble as to the max overclock, spending money on better cooling may squeeze a few more mhz out of it
Re: Palit 4830 - Trouble O/Cing it
Better cooling does help with overclocking and also how good your PSU is. A weak PSU will stifle any overclocking ambitions you have!!
Overclocking is also dependent on the BIOS too. My HD3870 with its original BIOS would only overclock stably from 777mhz to 843mhz. When I flashed it with a newer version of the BIOS it could overclock to 877mhz easily.
However replacing the heatsink and flashing the BIOS will invalidate your warranty.

Sorry, should have been more specific... ATI Tray and Tool just will not start without crashing. AMD GPU can't read the clock speeds.
So i can't even get to finding the max oc cos i can't use any tool apart from catalyst to change the speed, which limits to a 50mhz O/C.
Re: Palit 4830 - Trouble O/Cing it
The only realiable way to overclock is to use radeon bios editor and manually raise the clocks. I advise the use of a bootable USB flash drive and atiflash to actually do the flashing.
Re: Palit 4830 - Trouble O/Cing it
Try using GPU-Z to read the clockspeeds and temperature. Also use Rivatuner to overclock. However the ATITool stability testing is useful.
Re: Palit 4830 - Trouble O/Cing it
GPU-z will also let you grab and backup your current bios.

listen to that post and you will brick your card..
if it doesnt boot after a flash theres no way back, unlike software.

which is why i haven't done that yet.
Also, looks like i'm not the only one with the problem.. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=212752
Will go try the latest Betas of ATI Tray iaw that post, see if i can get anywhere.
Re: Palit 4830 - Trouble O/Cing it
its a risk but u can flash to a new version of a bios for the same card, flashing to other models is asking for trouble, along with flashing the same model to a factory overclocked card
the only time you would flash to a higher clock speed is after having tested using software at a higher clock speed and being happy it will hold those clocks 24/7
i did it with my water cooled bfg as the muppets flashed the wrong bios out of the factory, it held the clocks so i flashed it, but they insisted on sending me a new card at the correct speed by courier exchange, so i let them :)
Re: Palit 4830 - Trouble O/Cing it
With my Sapphire HD3870 the earlier versions had a limit on the maximum clockspeed it could reach. I flashed it with a BIOS of a later version of the same card and not only was the overclocking block lifted but there was better control of the cooler fan too!! :) However like I said before this will invalidate your warranty!! :(

Windows XP 32 bit, SP3.
Re: Palit 4830 - Trouble O/Cing it
Have you tried the latest ATI Tray Tools beta yet?
Or maybe the latest Rivatuner a new version came out a few days ago.
Also OCCT has a decent GPU test with error detection you can use for stability testing.
Re: Palit 4830 - Trouble O/Cing it
have you fully installed the Microsoft .Net framework updates?
reason I ask is that the ATI driver control panel only works properly with those, so MAYBE the overclocking tools do too.

Hadn't at the time of the original post, but have done now and works well. 700/970 seems stable without any more VID.
Just reinforces the fact i need a new pc!
Thanks for the help guys & gals.
