is this monitor any good?
been looking at this monitor for my brother's PC.
he only uses his computer for doing homework, MSN, and browsing the internet.
never does any gaming or anything on it.
so.. will VGA be alright at 2048x1152 or will the quality be horrible?
even though he's only doing basic desktop work.
he really likes the idea of a big monitor and big resolution, which is why i've found this.
any advice/suggestions welcome :)
Re: is this monitor any good?
Not a bit fan of VGA much past 1024*768... I tried it on my 1600*1200 monitor once, and it was decidedly sketchy, but then I'm a bit fussy about such things.
Why don't you connect one of your existing 24" monitors up via VGA if possible, and then you can see what it's like.
Re: is this monitor any good?
i was thinking about connecting one of mine up with VGA, but i don't have a single DVI-VGA apapter from my graphics card.
i think i might take one of them round to my brother's house cos his GFX card has a DVI and a VGA on it.
i've tried googling and stuff, but everyone says different things.
soooo confusing :(
i've just thought of maybe looking for a photo of them comparing or something
Re: is this monitor any good?
Just did a quick compar for mine on VGA compared to DVI for you:

I think mine needs a bit of de-green-ifying for VGA ;)
Re: is this monitor any good?
thanks TAKTAK :)
is that supposed to be displaying the same image though?
looks a little garbled up if it is.
also another random question.. 20,000:1 contrast ratio?!
my monitor's only 1000:1.
how can it be 20x better than mine?

That'll be a dynamic contrast ratio. Basically the actual ratio will probably be 1000 or 2000 (edit: yeah, ebuyer have 1000 in brackets next to it), but it will vary the backlight to make blacks darker etc. There are upsides and downsides to this, but as usual the main reason it's done is to allow the manufacturer to put a higher number on the spec sheet. I'm sure there are much better articles on the subject, but the wiki page gives you the gist of it. This comes across as somewhat negative, but you should be able to turn it off in the menu if you want so it's hardly a bad thing that they give you the option.

tis done off the same output, the GFX drivers just recognise it as a different monitor so set the display to be secondary, so the first image is off the desktop, second is of the desktop wallpaper (random cycle)
But it really is that green on vga:(
Re: is this monitor any good?
just thought i'd update the thread.
i went ahead and bought the monitor, and WOW
VGA ftw :)
i've even decided to go out and buy 2 VGA cables for my monitors cos i even prefer it on my 24" monitors.

would definitely recommend buying it.
£130 is an absolute steal :D
Re: is this monitor any good?
You'll be buying a CRT next...
VGA != Win.

lol! I so wish I could get hold of a 20"+ CRT... much better scaling at non-native resolutions *and* better refresh rates. And my wife's old 17" crt is slowy dying on us :(
Re: is this monitor any good?
24" Widescreen CRT\'s are like golddust. Been trying to get one for a while but they are so expensive :(

Re: is this monitor any good?
but CRTs are terrible.. they're so dull and bland compared to LCDs :(
i had CRTs for years then switched to LCD and now everything's bright and cool :D
Re: is this monitor any good?
i got a cibox 22" LCD monitor with native resolution of 1680 by 1050 (normal 16:10 aspect) and i have no idea what you all got against VGA
it displays everything perfectly no issues at all
i think its just when you have cables that are very long then maybe a issue but normally you would never see a difference
Re: is this monitor any good?
The issue with VGA is that it is an analogue signal so your computer generates a digital signal converts it to an analogue signal passes it down the cable then your LCD monitor converts it back to a digital signal to output the display. The problem comes in the 2 conversions which can effect image quality. In CRTs it is not an issue as they output an analogue signal anyway.

It's very noticeable if you look at text all day like I do. On a VGA cable text is blurry - for instance, the dot on an "i" isn't a single pixel (assuming you have anti-aliased text switched off). It makes me feel like I'm slightly drunk, which sounds good initially, but really isn't...
With DVI, all text is really crisp. For people that play games or watch movies/TV on their PC mostly, then I doubt VGA/DVI makes much difference really.
