    GTX 295 Power requirments

Does it *have* to have the 8 pin power connector plugged in? can a 6 pin one be used in the socket?, I remember the first ATI dual GPU card had a 8 pin but only needed it for overclocking?
I have a 700watt Seasonic PSU which is more than capable of powering it but only has 4x 6 pin connectors.

    Thanks

I'm fairly sure you have to use 8pin (may be wrong on that though ), but you could get a PCI-E 6pin to 8pin converter. Here's the cheapest I could find:

    as above.

it needs to be 8 pin connection but you can get adaptors to sort.

What does the adapter do that just pluging in a 6 pin connector wont do?, the adaper isnt going to pull more power from the 6 pin?

The additonal 2 pins are both ground anyway, go figure. Since you have 4 PCIE 6 pin see if you can find a 2x 6 pin to 1 8 pin adapter Some cards may even come with one in the box.
