GTX 285 - possible noise problem?
Hello everyone,
I have noticed a high-pitched, albeit not very loud, sound coming from inside my tower... It can be hard to tell where it's coming from but I'm almost certain that it's GPU related, as it seems to be loudest when I put my ear closer to the GPU, plus, it only happens when I'm running a graphics intense program (such as EVE Online).
The sound isn't noticable if you have other noise distracting you, but... if you have headphones on and are on Ventrilo, for example, then you can certainly hear this little persistent "squeeeek" in your ear. Sorry for lack of a better descriptive, but that's what it sounds like, a high-pitched squeek... And it changes sound ever-so-slightly whenever I move the mouse!
For example...
It sounds like X when I don't move the mouse, inside EVE...
It sounds like XY when I do move the mouse... but as soon as I stop, it sounds like X again.
This is highly annoying, and I don't know what is causing it or why... but like I said, I'm almost certain it's my GPU...
Does anyone know about this problem? Is it something common in GPU's that can be resolved easily?
Do I need to replace my GPU?
Thanks!

squeling capicator but hard to tell without hearing it myself.
Also try another game bar eve as eve is hardly the most demanding of games :P
Re: GTX 285 - possible noise problem?
It'll probably go away with a more demanding game actually - these things tend to happen when the GPU is finding it so easy that it's churning out 100s of frames a second.
I've got the same thing on my new card - it shouldn't be a problem in the long run, just annoying. Try enabling V-sync or finding some other way of capping the framerate.

It's similar in function to that sound that your mobo makes when you're in DOS at startup and it's not allowing you to use the mouse or keyboard, and whenever you move the mouse it makes that annoying error-noise that drags on for as long as you move your mouse...
The sound is constant, but when I move my mouse it becomes slightly louder and has a different sound to it... I am not at home to test it right now but I hear it coming from the tower... with or without my headphones being over my ears.
I'll test with other games ...
I certainly don't have this problem when I'm on my desktop.

hmmm that sounds logical enough...
I'll try to see if I can drop the framerate and if that makes the noise go away...
You say you have the same problem, does that mean you can't fix it?

I've only just taken ownership of the card (and it's a different card to yours) - I've heard of various home-brew solutions that basically involve packing the capacitors/VRMs in insulating material (nail varnish) to dampen the vibrations which cause the noise. But they're all quite extreme and likely to duff your card, which given how much that must have cost you I wouldn't say was worth the risk. Best to cap framerates, check for groundings etc. and otherwise grin and bare it. If it's actually coming through your speakers/headphones then it sounds more like electonic noise than vibration, and that could be solved with anything from driver updates to making sure your sound card/headphone jack is properly grounded etc.

I'll keep messing around trying to figure it out :(
