    Worth replacing 8800GT 512 with 4870 512?

I just upgraded to a VX2260 Viewsonic TFT and it runs in HD @1920x1080 so the resolution is higher than my old screen of 1680x1050. I would like to know if I am going to see a noticeable improvement if I upgrade as I have found a great 1 day special on a 4870.

I would say at higher resolutions a 4870 will be a nice improvement, on a 1GB version though preferably.

    Oh yes, I upgraded to a HD4870 from a 8800GT 512. Makes games like Far Cry 2 & L4D a lot more playable.

Cool thanks, I have issues with certain tabs on these forums when using the internet at work, not sure why.

True, I did buy the 512, but tbh if there was a 1gb version out at that time I would've gone for that.

Would a GTX260 be worth getting instead of the 4870 or is Ati the way to go?

    Re: Worth replacing 8800GT 512 with 4870 512?

I actually upgraded from 8800GT to HD 4870. The difference is noticable but not massive. The GTX 260 does offer better performance in some games but generally the 4870 is much cheaper and is the best buy as they are almost the same cards performance wise. What is your budget mate?

    Re: Worth replacing 8800GT 512 with 4870 512?

^ I agree in general. But definitely shop around, the 260GTX can already be spotted for just about and even under £160. This puts it within £10 of the 4870. Since the two trade wins in benchmarks, it's worth looking up the games you are playing and decide according to that. It is possible that the games you play happens to be something that nVidia cards are weak in (in which case it's a non-brainer - go 4870). But if the opposite occurs, I would pay the £10.

I am in Vancouver so I keep trying to find the deals, just found a GTX260 for $220 plus taxes and delivery but thats a good price, may wait and see if the HD4870 drops alot more first though as the rumors are saying it will.
