    ATi HD 4850

Thinking of upgrading my 3870 to a 4850, have narrowed it down to two cards, both from Sapphire (like the brand never had any issues)

Looking at either 4850 Toxic Ed with 512Mb or for about £10 more theres the normal HD4850 but with 1Gb.

Now, all I really do is play BF2/AIX/IL2/Steam stuff so, would I be better off with the faster clocked Toxic or the 1Gb card?
Neither will be oc'd so its down to ram vs speed....

    Re: ATi HD 4850

I would wait for a few weeks as the HD4870 512mb price is in free fall. They are rapidly dropping to well under £150. I think that Pixmania have it on sale for around £140 including delivery. I have an HD3870 and for me the HD4850 is not enough of an upgrade as I could overclock the former to 877mhz easily with a newer BIOS. The HD4870 should have twice the real world performance of an HD3870 IIRC. However I am uncertain whether you PSU will be enough for a HD4870 though.

The RV790 - which is basically an overclocked RV770 - is coming out soon.

Yeah you can get a 4870 for under £150 at the moment.

What resolution do you play games at Trig??? Unless its 1900*1200 or more than in general the 1 gig card isnt worth it.

    Re: ATi HD 4850

Based on your system you're running a 17" monitor, so presumably at 1280 x 1024? Frankly at that resolution I doubt you'd get any noticable increase out of an upgrade - your 3870 should be pushing 60fps+ in most games. Unless you're planning a new 20"+ monitor in the near future I'd stick where you are and save the money...

I agree too!! My HD3870 with a Akasa Vortexx Neo and a newer BIOS could overclock from 777mhz to 877mhz and it was rock solid. Crysis and Crysis Warhead played fine with a mixture of medium and high settings at either 1280x800 or 1440X900. Of course I rarely used AA but this did not bother me much!!

    Re: ATi HD 4850

The Toxic version is a waste of money. It's a standard 4850 overclocked and packing a noisier cooler. You said you don't wanna overclock, well why buy something that is overclocked out of the box?

Best advice, damn him, goes to cat-the-fifth. Bide your time and snatch up a bargain 4850/70 in a little while. Both are good upgrades from a 3870, but it's not like you're in a rush to upgrade with the card you have. I'd also advise against going to 1GB of onboard memory if you are not going to be playing at extreme resolutions.. it does nothing for your ability to max out the details/quality settings at 'normal' resolutions like 1280x1024 or 1680x1050 for widescreens.

simply down to screen size then xhap, in my opinion.

Up to 22", go with 512mb version, and 24" plus, go 1 gig .

Now, you gotta know.. CAT THE FIFTH must be on commission for the new upcoming ATI chip, cos he never ever stops talking about it... which is good.. but he might die from excitement when it comes out, so leaving him out of this for a mo.....

the 4870 is a killer card.. and worthy. It'll tear the other two a new one, tbh. I'd go the other way if you dont need that raw horsepower though... I've got a nice 2mb S3 Virge here somewehere.. do you have a spare PCI slot?

I mentioned the RV790 NOT the RV740! See you made me mention it for the first time in this thread!!

At least get your code names right!!

Anyway I would get a cheap HD4870 512mb if you are upgrading . Pixmania have them for £140 including postage and Novatech for a few quid more.
Also check that your PSU is good enough to handle it as the HD4870 has much higher power consumption than a HD3870.

Personally I would put an aftermarket heatsink on your HD3870 and overclock it. Much more fun!! Cheaper too.....!

I did the same upgrade a while back now , 3870 = 4870. Massive performance boost. The 4850 was the best bang for buck card with excellent results. But that was when the 4870 was a £200+ card. As mentioned you can pick on up brand new for around £165 delivered.

I have the original HIS 4870 512MB GDDR5 and recommend it highly.

    Re: ATi HD 4850

TBH with the newer drivers and some overclocking the HD3870 has been fine for most games I have played. This includes Crysis and Crysis Warhead. Being a Moose Muppet I FUBARed it so I have replaced it with a secondhand HD4830 now as the x1900gt I am using currently is a bit too slow for gaming now. At least I have now "saved" myself!!
