    ATI 4870 512mb vs Nvidia 7900gtx - should I upgrade

    Hi there,

Is the ati 4870 512mb a good upgrade for £100 from the nvidia 7900gtx 512mb?

I play games like CODWAW and Crysis

Will I see alot of performance difference?

Because they are both 512mb is it worth spending £100 to get the ati 4870 512mb now? If not, what would you recommend I go for instead??

    Please help

    Thanks guys..

    Re: ATI 4870 512mb vs Nvidia 7900gtx - should I upgrade

There is a HUGE difference between the card, though I am not sure if the rest of your system might hold it back.

Just to as a rough indication of the differences. Check this review: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2873&p=6

See how the 8800GTX stomps over the 7900GTX (itself faster than the 7800GTX)?

    Now read this review: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3341&p=12

The 4870 is also at a different (higher) level to the 8800GTX.

Two generations makes big difference even when they have the same amount of memory.

Well my HD3870 was twice as fast as my x1900gt in Crysis and the HD4870 is twice as fast the HD3870 in the same game! As long as you have a reasonable dual core processor and at least 2gb of system RAM this will be a huge upgrade. Make sure that your PSU is good enough though!!

    Re: ATI 4870 512mb vs Nvidia 7900gtx - should I upgrade

    my current specs are:-

    q6660 @ 3.6ghz
    4g Ram
    TRUE HSF
    Asus Rampage Mobo

do you think I would see a huge performance increase making the £100 more worthwhile for just a 4780 512mb?? I am wondering whether the 4870 1g would be even better?

    What do you think?

Its just that a friend offered me his 4870 512mb for £100 so was wondering how future proof it is and whether spending an extra 50 - 60
for the 1g version would be even better? Or wouldnt it matter that much on the games I have mentioned...as money is tight..

I currently have a 500w Antec Neo True Power hope that is adequate..

    Re: ATI 4870 512mb vs Nvidia 7900gtx - should I upgrade

The 1gb version is probably worth not more than £20 to £30 more than the 512mb version TBH.
I would save the money and go for the 512mb version. I think that you PSU should be OK. I would try the card with the Q6600 at stock speeds to see if the system is stable and then with the Q6600 overclocked.
Crysis would definitely benefit from an HD4870!!

It's definately a good move mate, you won't regrett it. You'll see big performance gains. Whats more... the 4870's are dropping in price!!

You could try getting the Zotac AMP GTX 260 or an OC 260 - or you could try getting a second hand GTX 280!

Not at the price you are offered (£100 for the 4870 - honestly, I would take it at that price if you don't want it lol). If you look at the retail price, the GTX260 (216) is about £10-15 more expensive depending on the card. It might be a tiny upgrade from the 4870 overall, but I see it as more of an sidegrade. They trade wins often enough to warrant you looking up the benchmarks of the games you are going to play with and decide accordingly.

Well the OC editions of the 260's are well worth it. The reviews out there show a good increase in performance over stock 4870's. Pickup a second hand card with full warranty for a bit less. That's what I would do personally!

*Shrug* - apple to apples, wouldn't it make better sense to compare OC'ed card with OC'ed card? Unless the GTX260 are better OCer than the 4870, the difference between the two overclocked shouldn't be too far off. Plus the price gap between vanilla card and their overclocked counterpart tend to be in the region of £30. The diminishing return for the additional costs is quite (too) significant IMO.

    Re: ATI 4870 512mb vs Nvidia 7900gtx - should I upgrade

You can get an overclocked Powercolor HD4870 512mb with an aftermarket cooler for £150 delivered and the 1gb version for £20 more:

    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s....html?POW-4870

    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...html?POW-48701

TBH an HD4870 512mb for £100 is still over £40 cheaper than buying a new one and since your mate is selling it to you I assume it is in full working order.
For the money it is well worth the upgrade.

You have a point here. It wasn't a fair comparison.

    Re: ATI 4870 512mb vs Nvidia 7900gtx - should I upgrade

    Couple of things.

    1 resolution?

    2 OS?

Off hand a 4870 512mb for £100 is a good deal however the benefits you'll see will be effected by the resolution of your monitor.
If you're on a 32bit OS then a 1gb card could be detremental because you'll lose another 512mb of system ram.
However that said, as the two games you've mentioned both perform better of ati cards you should see a nice bump in fps. (unless you're on a 17"-19" monitor, in which case you'll see a bump in crysis and a bump in the settings of CoDW@W )

Offhand cannot see a reason to not take up the offer of a 4870 512mb for £100 as long as this is a good enough friend not to pass you off with some dodgy borked card.
The reason here is even if you're only on a 17"-19" monitor the cost of a good card (4830 or 9800gt) is going to be around £90 so £10 for overkill is worth it.
