    GFX280 SLI or GTX295?

    Hi All,

I'm looking to go for a major overhaul on my system. I've already got my eye on everything i need for an i7 system. but now im looking at graphics. i currently have a single bfg gtx280 OC1.

I'm considering getting a second, but im also thinking of getting the BFG GTX295 and selling my other card so that i could (if needs be) have 2 GTX295's in the future.

Also, if i do decide to get a second 280, does it have to be EXACTLY the same or could i get the OC2??

    Cheers

    Re: GFX280 SLI or GTX295?

The card needs to be the same class, but I don't believe the clock speeds matter, so as long as it's a GTX280 you should be OK. I'd love to see the application that would need you to buy a second GTX295

Obviously, having a GTX295 will avoid any problems with games that have poor SLI performance, as the SLI is internal and therefore essentially invisible to the OS (and your games). However, I'm pretty sure that 2x GTX280 would be faster than one GTX295. So at that point I guess it's a question of how much you could get for your GTX280 second hand...

    I would get a second GTX280 TBH:

I don't think the clocks matter that much but you can always set them to the same using software though.

A GTX295 is £400+ whereas another GTX280 would be under £280. Also each of the GPUs o the GTX295 has 896mb of video RAM as opposed to the 1gb of the GTX280. The main advantage that the GTX295 would be in power consumption as it is based on the 55nm GT200 and not the 65nm GT200 of the GTX280 and some GTX260 graphics cards.

Why would you need another GTX295?? By the time ONE GTX295 will be a limitation it would be just better to get the fastest single card Nvidia or ATI make at that time.

haha, nah i dont think i'd ever need a second 295 tbh, i was just thinking about way in the future. i dont want to have to upgrade for a very long time so im burning through a bit of cash to get an uber core i7system.

After this the only thing im looking to buy is windows 7 when it comes out then im sorted for the next few years i hope, lol.

    Re: GFX280 SLI or GTX295?

Even though SLi is on the card, it still can have games which don't scale, AND IS NOT INVISIBLE TO THE OS as someone said. I own one, and it acts just like having two cards. Two GTX280's will outperform the GTX295 at extreme resolutions, but the GTX295 can be overclocked very well if you don't mind the fan speed high, and will use alot less power with only a minor performance drop. I am very happy with my card.

    Rish, one more question...

My card is a BFG GTX280 OC but they don't seem to be being sold on ebuyer any more which is annoying because thats where im buying ALL of the rest of my system from...
    Plus they're eliable...

Is it possible to run a BFG OC card with say an EVGA OC edition card????
Or would doing this be hazardous. lol.

Make sure you get a card which has a good warranty though!! I think EVGA are meant to be good in this way IIRC!!

    Re: GFX280 SLI or GTX295?

may want to wait a little while, the gtx 295 is getting a respin onto a single PCB (just like the AMD 4870X2). This will make the card cheaper to produce so they will likely be cheaper to buy and able mount after-market cooling for some extra overclocking headroom.
