I've been searching on info on whether or not DVII-I can transmit sound through an HDMI adaptor but can't find much in the way of a definate answer.
Im planning to buy a gtx260 and use an adaptor to convert its dvi-i output into hdmi for my HDTV.
Most places I look say DVI = no sounds but I thought DVI-I carried sound.
Could anyone clarify for me?

DVI doesn't have any provision for audio in the spec, unless some vendors are shoe-horning it in somehow

Although HDMI is based on DVI, and is backwards compatible with the DVI signals, it adds a lot of communication functionality and audio to the standard.
Although, according to this spec sheet - http://www.nvidia.com/docs/IO/55506/GPU_Datasheet.pdf - the gtx260 does have the ability to pass audio over an HDMI interface. So I guess it all depends on the implimentaion of the actual card you are intending on buying.

Does this 'Integrated HDMI Technology' thing mean that if attached a DVI to HDMI adaptor it would be able to transmit the sound through that?
Going by the spec sheet for the shipset, it means that the gtx260 GPU has the ability to have an audio output over HDMI.
This may or may not be implimented on the particular card you are intending on buying. I can't tell you if that card or the chipset will let you have audio in the DVI connection, as by rights it doesn't need to. If the card has an actual HDMI output however I would expect that to have the audio embeded in it as per the specs above.
Yeah I understand though it doesn't have an HDMI. Just DVI. Very confuddled.

UPDATE: Found out that ATI actually have a special type of dongle that works with their cards and tricks the DVI into thinking it's HDMI...or something like that.

Ok to confuse the issue, yes it is possible to pass sound over pure dvi and has been done.
however it's not easy or standard and the majority of hardware will not be compatible.
Basically you need full DVI-I dual link at both ends and analogue audio feeds intergreated into the hardware at both ends, what happens is the video signal is fed over the digital link and at the same time an analogue stereo audio feed can be sent over the analogue link.
However hardware that supports this (at both ends) is rare, specialised and expensive.
You'll not find on a standard consumer monitor/tv or graphics card.
As I understand it, you're looking to connect a tv up to a gtx260 via a hdmi cable cable and want it to carry the audio as well as the video.
The gtx260 should be able to do this, as it have the audio link, however it will depend on the card, some cards may leave this out to cut down on the cost, some cards have a hdmi socket and I think some use a dongle (as many of the ati cards do).
You seem to have a certain card in mind, I think your best bet is to contact the card's manufacturer and ask them specifically about that card and model.

I had a quick look at a couple of gtx260s on Scan, and the Gigabyte one does have audio out over DVI with an HDMI adapter.
As I said before, this is going to depend entirely on the card itself, even if the Nvidea reference can do it.
Go find some cards you like the look of and check their manufacturer pages, download the manual even, that will tell you if it will do what you want it to do..... or not.

EDIT: Actually went for the XFX GTX260 with Far Cry 2 and Mirrors Edge. Was only £160.00. Found out I can attach it though a composite to my HDTV and run it at anything up to 1080i so thats more than good enough for me.
