I've a Maximus formula and my 9800GX2 is away being RMA'd, I fancy a switch to ATI and see the 4850X2 as a good replacement......What's peoples opinion on the 4850X2???
Thanks!

It depends!! Firstly you need to get the 2gb version as it definitely has better performance according to reviews than the 1gb version. Also in games where crossfire work it has excellent performance and it games where it does not scale so well there is a performance hit.
It also maybe worth noting that next month sees the arrival of the HD4890 and GTX275 graphics cards.
Agreed it's gotta be the 2GB version, which is what I've seen for £260.00. I don't know that the GTX275 will be better as the 2GB is already on par with the 280GTX.
It's a tough space to pick in right now, the 4890 may indeed be the better prospect!

True, but the single GPU card is almost guaranteed to be worth the money in any title: the X2 could be problematic in some games. Plus, the 275 is rumoured to have the same 240 stream processors as the 280, but all its clocks are faster. I think the 275 could be a lot closer to the 280 than we're lead to believe...
The HD4890 according to an early review I posted(http://forums.hexus.net/graphics-car...t-picture.html) is 10% faster than an HD4870 card. However according to Gibbo over at Novatech it can be overclocked to be 30% faster than a standard clocked HD4870 in 3DMark Vantage.
I wouldn't buy a £260 for myself, but I would probably go for that card if I was going to pay that much provided that you can run it in single GPU mode. For a start, crossfire is supported in the games I currently play, and I would expect demanding games released in the future to support it too. For the less demanding games, and many of the older games that may not support Crossfire, a single 4850 does provide enough power. Sure it may seem silly to pay £260 when you could spend less than half as much for a single 4850 instead, but as long as it provides you with benefits in other games, I think it is a good trade. I see it this way: I'd rather have 60fps in old games and new games than 80fps in old games and 40fps in new games (figures for illustration purpose only).
Still find it odd that they didn't design the 4850x2 in the same way that they designed the 4870x2...
Very odd decision IMO as the 4870x2 does not use crossfire and is a joy to use with every title I have tried.

Well the HD4850X2 won't be too much faster, as the HD4850 = 9800gtx+ in performance roughly, and a 9800gx2 is just two 8800gts 512mb which are just lower clocked 9800gtx+'s on a 65nm process, so I would get a HD4870X2 or GTX295 for an upgrade.
Are you sure about that? To be honest, I am not sure exactly how either card are designed, but I am quite sure that I have read in a review that a 4850x2 is designed in such a way that it would work well, where two 4850 would sometime have issues (though not 100% perfect compared to a single GPU).
@ too nice, I heard similar about the 4850X2 and that it was better than most running dual, it's safe to say that in general a single GPU offers stable performance and that duals can be problematic.
It's time to wait me thinks, if the 275 does look to be quick, that could be a short term solution as DX11 is probably only 6 - 9 months away. Difficult to decide right now!![]()

I would not worry about DX11 right now as it will probably take at least a few months for decent games to come out and the hardware and drivers to be mature. You just have to look at DX10 and DX9 for example!
thats a very good point!![]()

I personally went for the fastest single ATI card out - 4870 1gb, so I can crossfire in the future. I don't think that you really need much more power right now. But it might be worth waiting to see how the 4890 performs once it is out in the next few days.

I always think the Crossfire or SLI plan in the future is a really hard call. It could be a good call but so reliant on driver releases and IMO Nvidia are quick than ATI....but that's only an impression I get tbh![]()
