would it be worth upgrading from a fx5800 ultra to a fx5950 ultra 256 ?

if you have money to burn then why not.

but if ur more careful with ya £££ then i think its best to wait till the new gen of cards comes out and see what they have to offer. only a couple of months wait, if that. besides do you really get bad fps etc with ur card as it is.

i think that agp and pic express versions will be released. it would be a waste not too. i cant see it bein pci-ex only. too much money to b made in agp still

The first generation of PCI-E cards are merely AGP card with an little add-on to make it PCI-E. Initial previews of them have not been fantastic, they're not pumping out as much power as they should.

Like all new technology, you'll need to let the technology mature first before you get the benefit of PCI-E.
And AGP is going to be around for a while, its not just going to vanish over night.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that pci express wont make much difference for a while, when we moved from agp 4x to 8x the cards of the time didn't have the gpu's or memory to use the additional available bandwidth, are we suddenly going to have cards with twice the bandwidth requirement?

Currently the top card in my mind is ATI's 9800XT (R360)....

The first PCI-E card (R423, ATI) looks set to be the same stats as you could get from AGP (R420, ATI), so I don't see much point in changing motherboards just yet, you'll still have room for upgrade!

I don't see PCI-E making any great improvements until sometime in 2005...

and, although ATI have been working hard at moving over to PCI-E, I don't see how they would be capable of destroying all of the current AGP cards, so there's still room for upgrades... and ontop of that, the nvidia PCI-E cards aren't true PCI-E, they need the extra bridge to help the flow, (which makes upstream slower)... so, I think you guys can wait!!
