looking for a new 24" monitor

due to my monitor randomly breaking on me am looking for something new, considering the dell monitor below

TBH if you want to have a much better screen you will need to spend at least £400!!

This depends if you do any colour critical work as the more expensive displays use IPS,MVA and PVA type LCDs which are better for this than the cheaper TN type LCDs in most monitors under £300.

If you can get one of the Digimate 24" Digimate L2442WD PVA screens(not the TN version) it would be the best in the under £300 range.

Since the HP is an H-IPS panel it is better for colour critical work than the Dell which has an S-PVA type. However the Dell maybe a better all-rounder!!

Unless you are getting the card for the better cooler I would get a standard HD4870 1gb instead.

For an extra £20 to £25 you can get a GTX275 or HD4890:

The HD4890 is 10% faster than an HD4870 1gb and the GTX275 seems to be a bit ahead of the HD4890. The HD4890 also consumes slightly less power than an HD4870 1gb at idle and many have hit over 900mhz(which the HD4870 rarely does).

However the maximum power consumption of the GTX275 is much higher though when compared to the HD4890.

Of course make sure that you have at least a decent 500w to 600w PSU from a good company for any of these cards.

What is the spec of your PC BTW??

If you intend to do any colour critical photgraphic work in the future then the following is very useful too:

It means that you will get more accurate prints as you can calibrate the monitor to specific colour standards. This is only important if you are seriously into photography though.

I'd personally recommend the Dell 2408 as it is excellent but probably slightly out of your price range.

My current PC specs are q6600 running at 3.15ghz, 4GB of RAM, Sapphire ATI 4850, Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard, corsair hx520w power supply. I am getting the toxic due to the cooler so i can overclock it. The main uses for my pc is to play and create games, going on the web and watching videos.

BenQ G2400WD -- Just under £195 at ebuyer. It's a TN panel (what do you expect for that price?!) but it does very well in the big LCD thread over at Anandtech. Obviously there are better IPS/PVA panel ones at £400+ though, such as the Dell/HP ones that CAT mentioned.

Alternatively you could compromise some screen real estate in favour of panel/image quality and go for an IPS-panel Dell 2209wa, which are about the same price as the BenQ 24" I mentioned.

The RV790 core in the HD4890 can clock much higher than the RV770 in the HD4870.There are physical changes in the core and PCB itself which means the card can reach higher clockspeeds. For instance the RV790 has a 850mhz core compared to the 750mhz of the RV770. The RV790 cards can hit 900mhz with many hitting 950mhz to 1000mhz on the core.

Looks like the HD4890 is significantly faster in Crysis and Crysis Warhead over the HD4870 1gb.

The price of the HD4890 should start dropping in the next few weeks. I would go for an HD4870 when they drop to a simlar price to the HD4870 1gb Toxic.

I wouldnt mind having a 4890 but tbh I dont really like the stock cooling on ATI cards, thus why i went with the 4870 toxic , but i wouldnt mind picking up a Nvidia 275 (if the damned things are ever available that is) plus the 22" Dell 2209WA does look good am probably gonna stick with the 24" Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP since it is soooooo good LoL and I am in the rare position where i can afford something like this so might as well make the most of it.

The GTX275 should also do the the job nicely unless HD4890 cards with aftermarket cooling start coming out. TBH I would get the monitor first and wait for the cards to start dropping in price and have better availability.

Yeah i might actually do that, I think my good old 4850 should be able to hold out a while longer, and thanks man for all the advice much appreicated :cool:

I have a HP LP2475 it cost a lot and I'm not sure it was sensible for me to buy it at the price but now I have it I think it looks great and am very happy with it.

If I had to find fault I think the reds are a little bright. At first the greys had a slight pink tone to them but by playing around with the ATI Catalyst settings and ticking "Use Extended Dispaly Identification Data (EDID)" that seems to set it up well, It might not be colour perfect but its still a very good monitor. You need to spend time setting the brightness etc out of the box its very high.

The stand is silver painted plastic in part but works good enough. (solid aluminium would have been nice.) It has lots of inputs and a USB Hub.
