    Direct X 11? When?

Ok...I was just about to push the "Order" button to get a GTX 275 to replace my current working 8800GT, however noticed in a review somewhere someone said "I wouldnt buy a card until DX11 is released..."

This had made me doubtful...it only seems like yesterday we where introduced to DX10, and now they are talking about DX11 being released this year?

    Is this right?

Is it pointless to upgrade the graphics card if my current can run the games I play on it...and wait until DX11 compatable cards are released?

All opinions are valued, as I unfortunately think too much into things when spending over £100

    Re: Direct X 11? When?

The last time I heard anything about DX11, they said it would be backwards compatible with DX10 cards. So the new features of DX11 can be done by DX10 cards.

Not sure if this is still true or not.

Isn't it being released with Windows 7? If not I would expect it pretty soon after.

Has anyone else heard this? I have been googling and have not seen anything suggesting this...however it does seem to be consistant in saying that it will be out with Windows 7 (which is due out this year).

I just read that not all of DX11 will be able to be done on DX10 cards, Only some of thie things so its really up to you if you do wanna wait. Not all games use DX10 atm so doubt there will be many that change to DX11 anytime soon.

    Re: Direct X 11? When?

It will probably IMHO take at least six months to a year after the initial hardware is released for a significant number of games to support it. Also many of the games will probably be backward compatible with DX10 too.

Look at the shift from DX8.0 to DX9.0 and from DX9.0 to DX10 and you will see it will probably not happen overnight!! TBH only when affordable sub £150 DX11 cards with good gaming performance in DX11 start to appear will DX11 titles start to become more mainstream.

It doesn't matter when you buy a graphics card, you'll always wish you'd waited another 3-6 months. So if you want a new card, may as well get it.

Not entirely. Some features of DX11 are on the software side, so will produce an advantage on any card (multi-core optimisation for eg.). Other features are already present in todays cards, like DX10.1 features on ATI cards. The tessellation unit on 4*** cards might also be usable in DX11.

But there are other features that will require entirely new hardware.

    Very very true!

Just buy the card if you want it now. And as stated already, it will be a while until after the release of dx11 cards will be worth it.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Re: Direct X 11? When?

I've heard DX11 will appear Q3/4 of this year. As other have said, parts are most likely backwards compatible and for the parts that aren't it will be some time before software utilises them.
