another "why do they do it?" card

(Note: this is NOT Scan's issue, they just stock and sell this stuff like many other etailers... it's just that I look on their website everyday, so I see the items there.)

    a 9600 GSO with 1.5 gb ram!
    http://www.scan.co.uk/product.aspx?ProductId=28566

is it two 768mb cards welded together? It's called the Far Cry 2 edition.

Does this get the ultimate WHY accolade, or is it still the 4850 with GDDR5 http://forums.hexus.net/graphics-car...gddr5-why.html ?

My guess? Because they can and still sell them.

more memory is better right? and it has Far Cry 2 on the box, so it's going to run that better than other cards right?

yup... in fact, I've just taken my old graphics card out, written CoD4 on it in permanent marker pen, and the frame rate has more than doubled.

Wish I'd thought of it b4

Re: another "why do they do it?" card

This is for people like my mate who bought a Dell PC 18-months ago with... 2 9500GTs in SLI! He was well chuffed! He's now complaining about how ridiculous the PC gaming market is because his £650 PC can't play many games 18-months down the line. I've never had the heart to tell him it's his own stupid fault The x1950 XTX i popped in my rig at the same time (and for less money) is still going strong!

Re: another "why do they do it?" card

XFX have a knack/habit of producing cards that are slightly out of sync with everyone else. I have one of their 7600GS factory overclocked cards ... still going strong ... just about. The only game I have with a slowish frame rate is Mirror's Edge.

768Mb I can agree with as 384 might not be enough. Yes it is another "why?" card. Do you also see the price? It isn't a lot cheaper than the cheapest GTS250.

It is possible to get 384mb 9600GSO (96sp) for like 50 quid so why pay for this?

It's stupid when manufacturers do this, like when I saw an 8500GT with 1GB RAM, can it really use it?

Re: another "why do they do it?" card

They do it to try and increase the sales of the basic models, so they don't have stockpiles of them. They load lower end cards with lots of RAM to sell them to people who are not clued up and think that GFX RAM is the only thing that matters.

I suppose this is the kind of short-termism that is actually damaging the PC gaming market. Sell the punters whatever you can right now using as many buzzwords as possible, and the future can go f*** itself.

    Short-sightedness - humanity's greatest failing. And I don't mean needing glasses.
