If you can wait a couple of months then you are most likely to get somethinng better. The GTS250/9800GTX+ and HD4850 will also be good upgrades but I would be inclined to get a GTX260 or HD4870 as these will last you much longer.

Your Core2 processor at its current speed(3.33ghz) will be fast enough for at least the rest of the year IMHO.

I would recommend waiting a couple months, the 8800gts is a fine card and it'll last you a while longer. But if you desperately need to upgrade the 260 is a good choice (I would go for the hd 4870 personally but you probably have a mobo that the 260 is a better choice).

Re: Graphics card for 22" monitor

I found this over the bank holiday = PowerColor HD 4870 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDTV Out PCI-E Graphics Card £148 from ebuyer.

I too have just upgraded to a 22" and found my 8800GT starting to splutter, so have ordered one myself as the 1GB and the power of the 4870 will help me turn up the candy.
