1. People encode in uncompressed AVI so that the game framerate is not (as severely) affected. Highly unlikely you can find something that will compress good and fast, if you use any resolution above 1280x800. Anything higher you harddrive couldn't write it fast enough (uncompressed) / your CPU can't handle the load.
2. Many encoders with default setting use prediction encoding, so you will only be able to trim your clip usually +- 10 seconds from where you actually want to start. Also your codec choice will be limited to Xvid / Divx and a handful of loseless compressing codecs. Do not use x264 (your CPU will struggle anyway).
FRAPS is sort of free, to a maximum of 30 seconds with watermark. If its for youtube, I don't think the watermark affects much.
