Can my PSU handle this upgrade?
I'm considering updating my Geforce 8800GT video card up to an GTX 285 2GB, but I'm wondering if my power supply, an Antec NeoBlue 650w that is about 18 months old, still (assuming it did in the first place) has the power to run it? If so, given PSU atrophy increases every year given my rig listed to the left, how long would it hold out with that video card?
Thanks in advance!
Re: Can my PSU handle this upgrade?
Nvidia specs say at least 550W so you should be fine, although there is always the Antec.care forums, maybe PM one of their guys to get input on this?
Re: Can my PSU handle this upgrade?
Thanks. Heh, I didn't even notice we had Antec forums here...then again, I haven't been around as much lately...
Re: Can my PSU handle this upgrade?
I'm running an 8800GTX on an Antec TruPower 650 of similar age. Given that 8800GTX was known as a power hog, I'd say you'll probably be OK ;)
Re: Can my PSU handle this upgrade?
Anandtech had a power draw of 320W at load in their 285 testing.
Re: Can my PSU handle this upgrade?
So I guess a 650w PSU is alright, then? If so, that's good. Now I just need to figure out if I can use the proper power cable for the GTX 285; IIRC, it requires one of those 2x6 pin connections, whereas the NeoBlue PSU I have just has a 1x6 pin connection that has the extra little 4-pin connector attached and I can't remember if this particular cable is one of the modular ones or not (and my cables are too much of a mess right now to look). :(
Re: Can my PSU handle this upgrade?
I should think the 650W PSU would be ok
Re: Can my PSU handle this upgrade?
I recokon your PSU would be fine, and it is easy enough to get a converter that will take 2 "molex" and convert them to a single 6 pin PCI-E connector.

That's good to know; it would save me from having to do some mass rewiring inside my rig (which is the one thing I hate to do in there :P ).
