Mid Range Graphics

Had a 7900GT in my old PC but had to use the card somewhere else. Not wanting to spend loadsamoney, ideally £100 mark would be good. Won't really be used an awful lot to play games on maybe the odd one. Will be displayed on my 40" Sony TV though so if it has HDMI out it would be a plus. I have a slight lenience toward NVIDIA, but won't just write ATI off.

Oh also will be doing image editing, not that its totally graphics card dependant. Mainly Lightroom and Photochop.

Re: Mid Range Graphics

I think that an XFX HD4830 for £75 will do the job:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159719

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s....html?XFX-4830

Also this XFX GTS250 for around £100 is more powerful though:

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...e.html?XFX-250

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/512MB...DTV-DVI-Retail

Also BOTH Nvidia and ATI cards can accelerate certain versions of Photoshop:

http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/view...nalId=kb405445

Edit!!

I am uncertain whether the XFX cards come with an HDMI adaptor though!!

This Sapphire HD4830 comes with one though and has low idle power consumption too:

http://www.bigbruin.com/2008/sapphire4830_1

http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews....54#review_menu

It costs around £85:

Re: Mid Range Graphics

They have an adapter I checked the site, although I'll probably run it through my KVM (so DVI -> DSUB) to simplify things. But if the picture is sketchy then I'll have to use another input to see.

Probably will go for the 250.

Also this XFX GTS250 for around £100 is more powerful though:
£100 for a GTS250 is non-sensical. Its a jumped up 9800GTX which are <£100 anyway.
I dont think the advice was good there.

If you go the extra £30, then the GTX260 is a good buy. Its on a par or better than the 4870 and is alot quieter and cooler running.

Re: Mid Range Graphics

I would have thought that a 9600GT or ATI4670 would be enough of an upgrade from the 7900 that, unless you ave thirsty for more graphics rendering power, you could come in well under 100 quid. I believe both can have HDCP and can do blue ray acceleration for your HD telly.

I think the wife's 4670 was only 60 quid and had HDMI out. One with a really big fan should be nice and quiet too as they don't use that much power.

Not really!! It is perfectly good advice as the 9800GTX+(not the slower clocked 9800GTX) which the GTS250 is based upon is slightly faster than an HD4850 and cheaper.

I have also checked Scan,Ebuyer,Novatech,OcUK,CCL,Dabs,Microdirect and Aria and there are no NEW 9800GTX+ cards for under £100 delivered!!

The cheapest 9800GTX+ card I have seen is this one for £103 delivered:

http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Compo...33059&context=

The GTS250 is cheaper still and needs one power connector too.

The budget is £100 not £130 and where do you stop?? There is always something a bit better for a few quid more and for an occasional gamer a HD4830 or GTS250 should suffice.

In terms of value for money the HD4830 is very good value for money for £75.

If you can wait 2 weeks the HD 4770 will make a big splash at less than £100.

This is good idea! It looks like the HD4770 will have performance close to an HD4850 but with lower power consumption.

Re: Mid Range Graphics

Well it was about 10% away from the HD4850 BEFORE it got a clock bump from 650 to 750mhz.

Its set as an 80 watts part, thats only 5W over what pci express can supply.

Re: Mid Range Graphics

For nvidia an 8800gt would be a good buy, can be found very cheap where any stock is left and 2nd hand.

A HD4770 is set to be released soon and very low power, useful for HTPC kind of usage and light gaming, and is quite strong in the slightly older games such as Half life 2: episode 2 etc.

CS4 Suit is CUDA accelerated, so any 8 series or better Nvidia GPU will make it run a fair bit faster so I would go for nvidia, and a big advantage at idle draw also vs ATi.

You consider HD4850 like power for "light" gaming?

I definitely think that an HD4850 or GTS250 will run many modern games at decent settings and resolutions. My HD4830 can run Crysis Warhead quite well for example.
