ATI Cards and Noisey fans
Does anyone have any of the following cards?
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=GX-188-SP
Sapphire Radeon HD4870 1GB

Sapphire Radeon HD4870 512MB
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...html?sap-48501
Sapphire Radeon 4850 1GB
I'm particularily interested in the Noise and heat from the 4850 1GB. Has anyone got any of these and how noisy/hot are they?
Thanks :)
Re: ATI Cards and Noisey fans
I have the top one, sapphire 4870 1GB. the fan is currently idling at 0 rpm, temps at 44C. anything above 45% fan speed in catalyst and the fan noise become noticeable, its about 1 metre away at the moment.
It gets to around 60C and ~35% fan speed after a few hours in crysis - everything on very high, 8xAA, no lag or jerkiness noticed from me anyhow.
as for the case and airflow situation, which will affect the results depending on your case and airflow.. heres what mine looks like.

2x120mm fans in front of the HDD's 2 more at the top of case, 1x80mm at rear (when i get a different CPU cooler, this area will change a bit) no fans at the side but there is a small grilled area.
so i'll let you judge the effectiveness of the airflow through the case.
Re: ATI Cards and Noisey fans
Thanks very much. I'm heavily leaning towards the 4870 1GB now as I've just had a look at a few benchmarks and it looks like at 1920x1200 it makes a big difference in a few modern games.
My case is an Antec P182 so airflow is pretty poor TBH
Re: ATI Cards and Noisey fans
I had a Sapphire 4870 512mb and it was relatively quiet as the fan rarely had the need to cut in. Like Stevie Lee said, above 45% fan is a little noisy but CCC rarely ramped the fan up that high. You do need to set the fan to ~42% to get maximum OC, the best stable OC I could manage was 780/1020.
From what I have read the 4870 1GB is a better buy though a 4890 at £164 incl. two games is also good value for money too.
P.S if you currently have a 512mb 8800 GTS OC, I'm not sure you're going to a see massive improvement if you buy the 4850 especially at 1280x960.

It's a 320 MB 8800 GTS Superclocked :) Only 96 SP's rather than the 128 that the 512MB ones have.
