What GPU? Best performance for little cost..
I wanna upgrade my GPU but cant settle on what to go for : Ive slimmed it down to maybe a 285/275 or a 4890...
The 4890 cant be picked up for cheap as chips compared to the others but ive herd it can be quite noisey compared to the others?
I will be going DX11 at a later date which with the 4890's price wont be to bad but in the games I wanna play.. it doesnt perform aswell..
I play Crysis, UT3, TF2, CS:S, Arma2 and a few others..
My moniter is a 22inch one and res of 1060x1050.. I wanna be able to turn on most eye candy aswell :)
edit: also.. what about the black edition?

Re: What GPU? Best performance for little cost..
The black edition is nice especially as its only £15 more than the standard edition. I won the stock 4890 and dont bother to overclock it for any of the games I play. It will do you well until dx 11 is really needed for anything.

XFX GTX 275

4890 Black

I'm edging towards the 275 b/c of driver support, physx etc but the 4890 has DX10.1 GDDR5 and more VRAM.. ARHHGG!!!
Re: What GPU? Best performance for little cost..
For £18 less get the 4890. The difference in performance between the cards doesn't justfiy a >10% premium for the GTX275.

IRC its only slighty louder then the gtx 275, so you will probably hear it on full load but if you have the sound on I doubt you will care. Its silent on idle.
The GTX 275 and 4890 are very very similar in performance, especially at your resolution, hence I would agree with scaryjim and go with the cheapest one.

I found this review of the BE and its kinda putting me off..

Noise is a big thing for me as my computer is in my room.. I don't use my computer for gaming all the time so don't want a hoover under my desk..
I might wait for the 4890 Atomic as thats supposed to have a near silent cooling solution.

Turn it off when you're not using it? ;)
Several programs let you set fan and performance profiles manually for graphics cards, so you could create your own massively underclocked profile with minimal fan speed for 2D work. Alternatively, just listen to MP3s when you're not gaming to drown out the noise... ;)
Re: What GPU? Best performance for little cost..
Try ATI Tray Tools and Rivatuner - you can tweak 2D and 3D clocks automatically and control the fan speed too.
