PCIe v2 gfx card compatibility with PCIe v1

Now this could be a dumb question, but I'm thinking of upgrading the graphics card in a system with only a PCIe v1 slot. Are PCIe v2 cards backwardly compatible with PCIe v1 mobos?

I have been involved in IT from a young age as a hobby and professionally for 10 years. That was most certainly NOT a dumb question. You can never trust any kind of theory unless you test it or can find someone else who has

It's absolutely not a dumb question - there are some isolated incidents where some specific motherboards with PCI-E 1.0 didn't play well with some PCI-E 2.0 cards, but they are very few and far between, and besides, most PCI-E 1 motherboards are the more compatible PCI-E 1.1.

(For reference, my ULI chipset has a PCI-E 1.0 slot and works fine with ATI PCI-E 2.0 cards).
