    OCing a 9800 pro pointless ??

    Hi all,

Can someone out there help me with this one please.
The quality of games are often measured upon FPS. New cards like the 5950 and 9800XT have been shown to run sat DX8 games at 280 FPS +
This is total overkill yes ? No one can really notice the difference between 200 FPS and 280 FPS.

Okay my first question is at what FPS will you axtually begin to notice game slow down ? I have heard 30 FPS mentioned before but can't really remember.

Secondly if I can run for pure example UT2004 at 80 FPS but when I OC the GPU it will do 100 FPS is there any point as the OC will be damaging the life of the card ?

    Cheers !

I can notice a difference between 60-80-100fps on a game, after that then I can't really notice any difference at all.

As for overclocking for UT2004, if you are happy with the 80fps, then no, there is no point in overclocking. OCing can damage equipment if not approached with caution and it will also reduces the life of the card, all be it by a small amount. The same goes for OCing a CPU.

Just out of interest, how do I find my FPS in UT2004? I have everything set on highest @ 1280X1024 and I don't notice much slowdown at all, nothing that bothers me anyways. If I stick it all on high I get no slowdown what so ever.

I would only overclock when you cant run over 50% of your games at full detail and/or you feel that your quality of gaming has suffered quite a bit with the speed your video-card is pumping out.

Also i think if you know with-in the next 3 months your going to upgrade then overclock your old card until the day you replace it (as there is a risk of damaging the card while overclocking)

So you'd say that a good base limit is 100 FPS ?
The 80 FPS for UT2004 was just plucked outta thin air lol I have only run the demo version and have no idea what I run the FPS at.
For some reason I normally only eun my games at 1024X768 on my 17" I find anything more and menu's begin to get tiny as hell. Might try and whack it up though.

Well supposedly 60FPS is a good speed and only when it is less than 30FPS do i personnally feel much difference.

P.S. i run nearly all my games at 1280x960 no lower than 1024x768 & never at 1280x1024 (I have a 17" monitor too)

I run everything @ 1280X1024, apart from Star Wars Galaxes, as that is limited to 1024X768.

Aslong as you have over 60 in all parts of the game then that is fine.

when you are playing farcry or games as demanding as this overclocking is very usefull. where some people say 30fps is acceptable personally i prefer a game to run at 50-60 minimum just to save slowdown when multiple enemys are on screen

anything above this can only make it better though

Its far from pointless. Lets take ATIs product lineup, excluding the irrelevant cards as an example:

    9700 275/270mhz 1.48vgpu
    9700 pro 324/310mhz 1.5vgpu
    9800 324/310mhz 1.7vgpu
    9800 pro 380/340mhz 1.7vgpu
    9800 XT 412/380 1.7?

apart from small changes to the core, for example the thermal diode in the 9800xt, the cores are almost EXACTLY the same. At the same voltage and speed, they will make the same heat. If you look at how the gpu voltage changes for the speed, you see a pattern, which is ATI's recent cards are just overclocked 9700's!. Ofcourse it doesnt matter because if it dies, which is not at all likely, you can just send it back. Nvidia do the same thing btw.

The stock cooling on these cards is crap and just changing that will give your card about 5 years more life. As long as the temps stay low then it wont damage your card. With good cooling (w/b or copper cpu heatsink) and a vmod the gpu speed can be increased a lot without damaging the card atall...
I wouldnt bother with bios flashing as radlinker is less effort and has exactly the same effect.
For me the average fps I like is about 80 otherwise it will sometimes drop down to 40 which is noticable.

Why would you want to oc your card?

If you run high resolutions (ie. 1280*1024 and up), like eye candy (ie. turning textures to max, etc...) or you prefer having at least some decent level of AA or AF on.

Personally, I keep my card just below it's oc limit (440/370) to 436/366 because I game at 12*10, I like eye candy and turn on AA (*2) and AF (*16). This keeps my frame rates at around 60FPS, which is just the minimum I like when I game. If I can't get a game to run at that level, then I turn things down.

you overclock when you're not satisfied with the standard.

If you ARE, then you dont need to justify it. Or you overclock to prove summit.....like most people here....its a challenge....but its not essential

Older games ..... I crank up the AA and AF and start to need more clock speed after all.....

but I DO use VSYNC so 60 fps on an LCD is fine and dnady for me

And intense as Il-2 Forgotten Battles SEEMS to me...its not LIGHTNING fast, in the way UT is.....so fps is less vital.......not un iCLOCKS FORWARD....CLOCKS FORWARD....not uninportant...just less critical

I dont overclock because im not satified or to prove anything. More because I can and it doesnt take much effort... I only got the cheaper card becuase Id prefer to o/c it than spend more and leave it at stock...

I've overclocked my CPU a bit, but not my graphics card. Every game I play runs well on fairly high graphics, and I'll probably only start to overclock again when my PC can't run modern games that well.

Besides, even on low settings, a lot of recent games still look good!

i may be being extremely dumb here... but if windows is locking your refresh rate @ 60hz (which happens in nvidia drivers, not sure about ati ones) you wouldnt be able to notice a difference in anything above 60fps because all those extra frames would not be being rendered? so 60fps might aswell be 6000fps..

i realise that a high fps means that when lots of action goes on the dip in performance will still be at a decent level.. anyhow i'm waffling so i'll stop.

No you can get round the 60hz limit. The limit only affects 3d modes (opengl/d3d) not software. The best way to get round it is to use an app like reforce, which sets your monitors inf file (which says what modes it supports) to only support the modes you want. For example I have 1600*1200 32bit so that the only refresh windows can use is 85hz.
I find at 85hz you dont notice tearing even at 200fps+ so I just have it disabled all the time. having Vsync enabled does reduce fps by quite a bit.

FarCry is very demanding, I reckon an XT is really needed for 1280x1024 :S
