Post Will this PSU be ok?

    hi everyone,

I am upgrading my graphics card in the near future but I will have to buy a new psu but I need a bit of help choosing one.

    My current pc specs are:

    Gigabyte ga-ex58-ud3r
    Intel core i7 920 @ 3GHZ
    3 Gb's ddr3-1333
    PNY geforce 8800gt 512mb
450w psu with 17a on the 12v rail
    Dvd rw drive
    260 gb hdd.

    I am thinking of getting an Ati HD 4870 1Gb gddr5. http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=388744

I think this psu will do, its 500w and has over 30 amps on the 12v rail - http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku...ed#ProductTabs

Basically can anyone tell me if this psu is ok to do the job, and if its not could you pick out a different psu for under €70 from komplett from the above link.

    Thanks!

Re: Will this PSU be ok?

    It will be fine

OCZ use reputable OEMs AFAIK, and now own PC power and cooling.

Is there any particular reason it has to be from komplett?
You could have a look at C3, they are based in IE

Re: Will this PSU be ok?

Well the hd 4870 1gb is only €149 at komplett and the psu is only €57, good prices and they have fast delivery.

Never heard of C3, can you give me a link.

Re: Will this PSU be ok?

thanks, do you think 500w is okay or should I be looking for a higher wattage?

C3 are quite expensive, komplett seems to be the best deal.

The key is quality, not quantity, 500w is fine

I've got one of those supplies, it's a great bit of kit. Very silent, runs all my gear really well (to be honest my PC isn't that great anymore)

You'll be very happy with that OCZ

do the amps on the 12v rails add together, as in dual rail with 18amps each = 36amps on the 12v rail?

Re: Will this PSU be ok?

ur build won't draw more than 300w max. a quality 500w psu like the one you've chosen is more than enough.

Not generally. Each rail will have an individual limit (e.g. 18A in this case) then there'll be a combined limit on the 12V rails which will almost certainly be lower than the sum of the individual limits. If you can find the full PSU specs you should be able to check this.

EDIT: OK, I've checked the full specs. It looks like you can draw 18A off both 12V rails simultaneously, but you can only pull 481.5W over the 3.3V, 5V and both 12V rails combined. Pulling 36A at 12V is a power draw of 432W, so the rest of your PC would only have 49.5W available to it! That's not really enough power to run the guts of your PC (processor, memory, chipset etc). So while technically you can draw 36A on the 12V rails, in practical terms you'll never have that much spare power available!

Re: Will this PSU be ok?

so, do you think a better psu is required?

I was also thinking rather than getting a hd 4870 I might get a hd 4850, I only game at 1440 x 900 at the moment and if I need more gpu power I can add another 4850 later.

    Any thoughts on the gpu?

Another thing is, I will be overclocking the i7 a bit more once I get a better cooler> might draw a bit more power

Re: Will this PSU be ok?

no you don't need a bigger psu lol, check out any review of graphics cards or cpus on any website and they will most likely state the measured power draw of the whole system. even for heavily overclocked systems running a 4870 or equivalent would draw around 250w. it's only dual gpu setups that push power draw into 300w - 400w. the psu you have selected would be more than capable for ur needs.

Not necessarily a bigger one, but I found one for 64 euro http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku...ed#ProductTabs

this 1 has 25 amps per 12 rail and has 2 12v rails for only 7 euro more. But I might as well go for the cheaper one if it makes no difference?
