    Upgrading from a 4850

Hey guys, im looking for an upgrade this summer from my 4850 and am looking at the GTX 275. I now that the differences at my resolution (1680x1050) wont be a great deal, benchmarks lead me to believe that it will be noticeable and worthwhile, especially considering the improvements i can expect in adobe cs4 which gives major improvements in Nvidia cards over ATI cards (futureproofing was another thing too).

My only concern was that when DX 11 comes out, im worried my card might not last as long as i want it to (after this, i dont wanna have to upgrade for a long time) as it may not support dx11. However i remember reading somewhere that dx11 will be backward compatible with dx10 hardware. Can anyone confirm this, or is it just better to wait for the next generation of "dx11" cards. Any thoughts on this or my card choice would be greatly appreciated

AFAIK ATI cards can accelerate CS4 too according to Adobe.Anyway the HD4890 1gb is much cheaper than the GTX275 and at 1680x1050 there should be virtually be no difference between the cards.

Novatech and OCuk are both doing the 4890 for around £145 as the weekend offer which would see you around the same performance as the GTX 275 for 2/3 of the price.

I too suggest a 4890 1GB. See if you can find the one with the Vapourchill cooler. They run a lot cooler

    Re: Upgrading from a 4850

About CS4, yes Opengl is supported however, CUDA is implemented too which greatly improves rendering in viewports (like in apps such as after effects) and h264 encoding. not to mention physx (not a biggy for me, but why not?). Also, isnt the memory bit rate higher on the GTX 275 at 448 in comparison to 256 for the 4890 and if found the GTX to be only £10-15 more expensive (not much in the grander scheme of things).

A more important thing however is whether these cards even support dx11 as if not, i wouldnt be buying either.

thanks for your help so far

Nope - the 4890 uses DDR5, which has twice the bandwidth per clock of DDR3 in the GTX 275, so the bandwidth at at the same speed is like 448 on the 275 vs 512 on the 4890.

Nope. The gtx 275 is dx10, the 4890 is dx10.1. It's fair to say that as they stand the 4890 will support (many) more DX11 features than the 275, but it won't support all of them.

Both cards will of course run under DX11 software though.

The HD4890 uses GDDR5 which is quad data rate so it actually has a huge amount of bandwidth available.

The HD4890 can be had for well under £145 delivered:

    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s....html?NOV-4890

Have you tried ATI Stream with your HD4850??

Here is a review comparing it with Cuda for video encoding:

    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2348550,00.asp

If anything the current ATI cards support DX10.1 which some Nvidia cards are going to start supporting later this year. TBH I would save your money and wait until early next year when both the Nvidia and ATI DX11 ranges would have been fully launched.

    Re: Upgrading from a 4850

ok guys, thanks for the info. i forgot about the 4890 having ddr5 whichexplains my question about bandwidth. i think i will follow cat's advice and just upgrade next year as my 4850 isnt exactly slowing me down at the moment. as for the point about ati steam, whilst it may be faster in encoding videos, lets not forget that adobe only implement cuda so its gpu accelerated (cuda) or not gpu accelerated (stream)

    thanks again

    Re: Upgrading from a 4850

Well if you wait till next year new cards will be out the prices of that card would have dropped.. a lot.

and new games will be out as well, and then depending what games you want to play at what res you want to play at, the 4890 might not cut it.
