Yes my vote is ATI, the 9800 is yet to dissapoint me. I have 9600pro turbo, IT also has yet to dissapoint me....
Hmm, is that the correct way to say that?

But you might want to wait just a little while longer as when the new video cards appear i have the sneaky suspicion that the 9800 pro will be around £100 (So start saving just that little bit longer)
Can you get a 5900XT within your price range? If so, go for it. The 5900XT is certainly the best mid-range card. Plenty of reviews out there. It beats the 9600XT handily and puts up a good fight against the more expensive 9800np/Pro.
It probably is out of your price range though. With current exchange rates, at AU$265 for a 5900XT here (cheapest), it's about £110.
Your other option though is a 9600Pro. You may get lucky and be able to oc it to near XT levels.

I'd say go for a 9800pro in a couple of weeks or so

having only had nvidia's i can't really comment on ati's but having said that i'v only ever used my gf2 and bro's ti4200 [remarkably better than my old gf2] but I'd like to see how an Ati looks as a comparison...
i shall sit on the fence for this one, ok, perhaps a less sharp bit of the fence then - to save my bum

I've got the 9800se AIW converted to a 9800pro and it runs very well indeed.
The one thing I will say however is that they do require good cooling due to the 0.15micron process as opposed to the 0.13 used on the 9600. My zalman ZM-80HPa struggles with the very small amount of cooling I have in my case.

I own a PC that changes regularly, so I don't bother putting anything in here...
