    Radeon vs GeForce

Ok I've decided that it's about time that I upgraded my GeForce 2 MX.

But there are 2 brands to choose from. In the past I've generally thought of Nvidea as being a little better not necessarily for speed but for compatibility and stability. I do prefer to use OpenGL where I can.

I'm looking at spending about £80.00-£90.00

Which give the best results for the money and what do you guys think.

ATI cards have no issues with compatability or stability. I would consider the drivers better than the nvidia ones (although there linux driivers are lacking, apparently. Why would any one need a good card for linux though?)
Directx has improved a lot while opengl has remained the same for a long time, and so is worse for graphics quality (as there are no standard shader extensions, yet, only manufacturer specific ones).
I would say go for the 9800np (it seems these are now discontinued?) or 9600pro/XT which are below £100 now

id save an extra £35-£40 and get a radeon 9800 pro you can pick them up new for around £130 now or even a fx5900 for that price but id go with a ATI card

A good card for linux lets you play games in Linux that look good!

Anyway, as far as I can see, the Radeons are still holding firmly. As for not having stability issues - I'm not so sure, but ATI release drivers quick enough for my liking (except for linux.)

Radeon vote here (unsurprisingly ). Go for a 9600, ATI drivers are fine for me.

Radeon here too, had a Ge-Force and a Ge-Force2 MX and now a Radeon FireGL(9700chip).

The picture quality is slightly better on a radeon than on a ge-force and the drivers seem to be better, as for stability it's been as solid as a rock.

    I have a Gainward Fx5900 Ultra - flashed to 5950.

No regrets, none at all. Absolutely amazing card IMHO. Given the choice again I would still go for this card over anything else right now. One of the very few purchases I have made where I felt I absolutely made the right choice.

I've no doubt If I pushed the AF an AA to maximum settings, an ATI card might be faster, but in most games anything over 2XAA is overkill IMHO.

The pools of drool at the recent LAN watching Forgotten Battles on my fairly medium spec PC told it all

    All for £130

Given your budget, I'd prolly go for an ATI when all is said and done, but there isn't such a big gap bewteen ATI and Nvidia as many would like to make out (as on Ocuk for instance)

Another vote for ATi here, I've got a 9800se AiW @ pro, awesome card and thats before I mention the tv tuner/remote control etc.

As for drivers I have had no problems at all www.omegacorner.com - a m8 uses their nvidia drivers as well, excellent drivers imo.

Another vote for the Radeon, especially with Radeon 9800 Pro's for under £130 now, bargain!

I used to be biased towards nvidia upto the geforce 4 but the fx range should be scrapped :/ ATI's drivers have come a long way too.
