Re: HD4860 being released!
I believe the 4830 is already officially end of line. It certainly looks like the 4850 is EOL, which I guess would also suggest that the 4870 will go soon, too.
I presume the 640 shader count reflects the tolerance in the manufacturing process - if most of the dies come off the line with at most 2 (out of 10) shader blocks corrupted, then it would make sense to market the cut-down versions of those cores as 640 shader rather than 800 shader.

That and they need a market differentiator.
Re: HD4860 being released!
Oh well, atleast they are naming them differently and actually changing the product a bit more than nvidia did :P.
Just got a 4850 recently aswell! Oh well, power and performance was the sweet spot for the 4850 vapour x :).
Re: HD4860 being released!
My guess is that A- they have an excess of gpu's with a few dead cores so they are clearing them in new cards
and B- they are bulk buying GDDR5 to bring it's costs down
So buy shifting over to new cards they can clear the faulty gpu's and use up bulk GDDR5 chips
Re: HD4860 being released!
It will be interesing to see how this card performs though. My HD4830 can reach 700mhz and will be interesing to see how the extra bandwidth from the GDDR5 helps the performance.
I suspected a while back that a 640 stream processor GPU would replace the HD4850 but I thought it would based on the RV740 and not the RV790.
Once the RV770 and RV770LE cores run out I wonder what card will come out between the HD4670 and HD4860??
It wouldn't surprise me if it is a RV790 based or even RV740 based?? With the poor yields of the RV740 it would make sense to salvage the faulty cores.Hopefully it will have one PCI-E connector.

The current graphics card market has more twists and turns than the latest soap!! Good thing though as I don't like soaps generally.......unless they have pretty ladies in them!!:redcard:

Re: HD4860 being released!
I wouldn't say the HD4850 has been replaced by the HD4770. In my mind it's the HD4770 that's end of line, not the 4850. Having seen the ludicrous power consumption of the HD4730 (it even has both 6-pin connectors!) it doesn't make much sense for a PC build, you're better off tracking down an old HD4830, spending a little extra on a 4850, or a little less on a 4670. Obviously the HD4770 to all intents and purposes doesn't exist, which leaves the 4850,60,70,90 (as I don't think the HD4830 will be around much longer). The releases are a little confusing, but I still think that's better than both a 192 and 216 core GTX260 (when shops often don't specify which one it is on the page), 275,280,285 and 295. Oh, that and rebranding the 8800GT to the GTS. and then to the 9800GTX. and then to the 9800GTX+. and then to the GTS250.
Re: HD4860 being released!
If the 640 stream processor HD4860 is indeed faster than the HD4850 it just shows how bandwidth limited the ATI cards are really!! After all the HD4860 has a slower clocked GPU than the HD4770 but much more bandwidth.
Re: HD4860 being released!
Who another card?
Seems a fairly logical plan, I want to see how it clocks first before deciding on Crossfire goodness :p
