Dell E-IPS monitor

Hi guys. Starting to check out components for a new build.

Whaddya think of this:

Dell Ultrasharp 2209WA

Panel Size: 22"
Aspect Ratio: Widescreen
Panel Type: e-IPS - In Panel Switching
Optimal Resolution: 1680 X 1050 at 60 Hz
Contrast Ratio: Dynamic Contrast Ratio 3000:1 (typical)
Brightness: 300 cd/m2 (typical)
Response Time: 6 ms (typical)
Viewing Angle 178° / 178° (typical)
Color Support: 16.7 million colours

I can get it for £175 ish. Figured it would look better than the average TN panels in that price range. Thoughts?

£175 stretches quite far these days and LG make some wonderful monitors despite being TN panels if you wanted to go up to 23/24" for example.

Good screen though afaik so if your hearts set on it then go for it.

One of the best screens for gaming imho. Low grey to grey times, low response time.

For that price go for it!! Fantastic budget monitor IMHO!

I figured the lower res will allow me to get a cheaper graphics card. And 24" might be a bit big for my Uni room

I love my 2209was, however there are a few of downsides:
1. Silvery glow when displaying blacks can be somewhat annoying at night
2. Gets quite warm, with some heat being pushed through the panel towards the user
3. Brightness control is almost useless. You'll find 0 brightness almost no different to 100

It's as I said, it's good for gaming because it has low grey-to-grey times and very low response time. If you inted to watch movies, etc, on it, I recommend getting a S-PVA panel. Higher response time, higher grey-to-grey times (both better than TN panels however), and much better colour defintion, especially black.

Thanks, I'll bear this in mind.

How bad is the silver glow? are we talking mildly annoying or unusable in a dark room?

Do you know of any issues with input lag?

Agreed, but money is a huge issue. (As ever) £175 is really as high as I can go before other components in the build start to suffer.

Unless you know of any decent S_PVA panels going for that price?

I will be gaming, watching movies and working on the monitor, so I need a good all-rounder really.

The silvery glow depends on room lighting and as such is hard to give a useful answer. You only really notice it when the screen is displaying 95%+ black tho (how the eyes work etc). Being IPS there is no colour shifting, which is why I avoided TN panels.

Input lag is around 20ms, which is pretty good.
