    Exclamation HD4870 or HD4850

So, I bought a HD4870 and I wanted to make it passive using AC S1.
BUT , it needs 2 PCI-E meaning it will eat too much watts and if I decide to use the ACS1 , I'll have to equip 2 X 12cm Sharkoon fans.

Now, I could always buy a HD4850 which only needs 1 PCI-E and even if I use my AC S1, only 1 fan will do.

What do I do? Advice would be appreciated. Plz also keep in mind that I m currently using a 8800GT with AC S1

I prefer silence but would also like a similar gaming performance to 8800GT.

    Re: HD4870 or HD4850

Then you've got no need for the 4870 at all - even the 4850 is a lot faster than a 8800GT.

I would look for a 4770 which is about the same speed as the 8800gt, but runs a lot cooler. Powercolor and Gigabtye both do passive versions of the card.

    Re: HD4870 or HD4850

The 4850 is round the same perfromance as the 9800gtx+ (actually a bit faster)
Didn't think you could fit 2x120mm fans on the Accelero S1

That said the Accelero S1 should be ok to cool a 4870, depending on the fan you strap to it.

For Ati performance roughtly equal to the 8800gt you're looking at both the 4770 and now eol 4830 (if you can find one, ebyer have an MSI 4830 1gb for £67 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168791 ) the 4830 also has the advantage that it uses less power.
But that leads onto the question, Why buy a new card that performs just as well as your current one? Why not just keep your current one

@Pob: Sorry for thread hijacking just wanted to clear something up - did you mean the 4830 uses less than his current 8800 or less than a 4770?

    Re: HD4870 or HD4850

The 4770 and 4830 are pretty expensive IMO.

    I think I'll sell off my HD4870 and buy a HD4850.

    Re: HD4870 or HD4850

The HD4770 uses much less power at load than an HD4830 and HD4850 and a bit more power at idle than HD4830 and HD4850 cards which have properly implemented PowerPlay.

Sorry CAT is right again, I got the cards mixed up, it's the 4770 that uses less power vs the 4830
The 4830 has more stream processors but at slower clock speed.

But we're getting side tracked here.

    Re: HD4870 or HD4850

Perhaps you could also install some sound proofing in your case? Or get one that is better sound proofed. Seems strange to replace a graphics card with one that is less powerful that your current one. Unless of course you are changing the role of the machine to be a server or media player in which case lowest power is best.
