    ATI 4870 and Video Encoding

So I've just sold my friend a Sapphire 4870 512Mb, and he's big into video editing. He currently has a pretty poor E2200, overclocked to 3Ghz.

He is keen to get the most out of the extra GPU grunt, having upgraded from an X1950XT 256Mb.

I'm unsure what is needed to ensure encoding is GPU accelerated, and what kind of performance gains could be expected?

I assume there'd be some kind of additional driver download, on top of the usual Display Driver, that the program he uses will need to be coded to take advantage of this.

Do we now which programs definitely work.

Basically I'm looking for someone to just talk me though what the options are! Hope we have a resident expert in this area

I have always found the Avivo conversion software very useful - not least because it ably handles DVR-MS files comfortably, and also seems pretty competent with more or less whatever file type thrown at it - definitely an advert for GPU transcoding !
Don't have any experience of nVidia equivalent, but - as said above - the article linked to is a great start point

I never used/knew what the AVIVO software was/does. Will check it out. Thanks for the link CAT
