    One up for ATi!

    Great news for ATi lovers
Wonder if AMD will ever do the same to Intel as ATi has to nVidia....?

yeah iread that that is a right kick in the bollox of nvidia as xbox was gonna be up to 30% of nvidias profits lol well when you take the foot of the quality pedals there gonna be big drawbacks and this has certainly happened to nvidia
they are like the liverpool football team of the 70s and 80s and i suppose ati are the man utd who come overtake them and be number 1 for virtually every other season im pleased i swopped allegences so i suppose i have helped kick them

Heh, Bindi's right, Nvidia told microsoft that it didn't want to help it on xbox 2. They found they just weren't making enough money from the contract and the fact that microsoft were demanding money grabbing bstars

We to be fair, as prices for stuff comes down - like intel mobile celes, dram and pcb etc nvidia didnt want to budge on their chip prices (which they agreed to in their contract though - stupid microsoft), cause microsoft wanted to sell the xbox for less to get more sales.

Nvidia has been doing very will selling Xbox chips. They had an agreed price per chip, so they made money for every Xbox that MS produced. And MS was losing money for every Xbox they sold.
Nvidia like it that way they got their money for every chip - no risk. Then MS had to decrease their price on Xbox to compete and Nvidia stood firm on their price to make their profit. ANd MS had to lose even more money per Xbox.

ATI agreed to a royalty contract. (which I'm assuming) the chips are dirt cheap(probably practically no profit), but if the XBox(2) is a HUGE sucess, they make more money, as MS makes money. Not just money for every chip. So they are betting on the sucess of Xbox with MS. Instead of taking the money at production and running. More risky, but could turn out to make a lot more money.

Tbh i dont see how MS can make money out of an Xbox 2 :/ Not as if ATI are really renowned for their chipsets, nor do they have dolby soundstorm like MCP-T. Dunno how theyll play it tbh.

ATI have the licence to use the intel bus design or something, if the processor is going to be another intel, I'd imagine that intel and ATI would collaborate on a chipset too.

I'm guessing here, but I think getting the license from Intel for the P4 bus is part of the strategy of capturing the X-Box graphics and chipset production from nVidia.
