Hard to get too excited about it yet without a proper benchmark, but nice to see it's nearly there. Rumours are that the nVidia chips are still in the oven and need a following wind to get even press samples out by the end of the year.

Re: First pictures of DX11 successor to the RV740?

when windows 7 came out would have been the perfect opportunity to get ride of dead wood

ie: no more 32bit OS at all, and no more support for dx9
the average person wouldn't notice a 64bit OS and driver support would improve massively
who uses a geforce 7 series or below these days? dx10 cards are the norm, so games made purely under dx10 need to be the norm, instead of poor portings to dx10. or straight to dx11 if it's vista/w7 compatible

all this slow and patchy improvement means that the game designers are kind of obligated to choke their own games just because a few people wouldn't be able to play it, a big game designer needs the balls to stop supporting windows XP, or make dx9 an afterthought and much crapper than dx10 version

I love the look of it, the port arrangement is good too, now just can't wait for them to be released.

Can you list any games that have been ported to dx10 from dx9?

all this slow and patchy improvement means that the game designers are kind of obligated to choke their own games just because a few people wouldn't be able to play it, a big game designer needs the balls to stop supporting windows XP, or make dx9 an afterthought and much crapper than dx10 version
That's got nothing to do with it. There's no point making a PC game first and foremost - the revenue is peanuts. If you make a console game you're less likely to just lose money. Consoles are dx9 level at the moment.

Re: First pictures of DX11 successor to the RV740?

every game with dx10 support is a port. dx9 and dx10 are completely different, so instead of designing the game twice they just port certain elements to dx10. 10 should be more efficient, but what we see is massively lower frame rates due to not being designed exclusively for 10

and your right, that's sony's fault for not just waiting a few months lol

Or they could just use OpenGL, which would make their games much more Linux & Mac friendly.

P.S. you can do anything in OpenGL that you can do in DX10. You just have to do more work yourself.

Re: First pictures of DX11 successor to the RV740?

From the soldering it looks like they've gone for digital components in the power circuitry. If this card is going to be a 4770 replacement I expect that to not be the case for the version that goes into production - it would put the price up for a lower/mid end part.

Re: First pictures of DX11 successor to the RV740?

I wonder what market research shows with this simple question. What do you want from your next graphics card.

I know I want a powerful card like my 4870 but uses less power and is cool and quiet. The 4870 is brilliant and even still holds its head above the water. But its idle temp is roughly 50c and consumes as a guess something like 150watts in idle.

I want this power but running at 30c and on 75 watts.

That would be0 progress in my eyes.

Re: First pictures of DX11 successor to the RV740?

I really cant wait for the spec sheets on the new cards....

Supposedly the 5870 is being released at $299 (£200ish?)

    http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=102342

The rumor mills are brewing, most are saying the performance of one 5870 will be on par with a 4870 X2, which if true will make me definitely buy this card. The other major rumor is that it will have 1600 SP's v the 800 of the 4870/4890.

The one thing I will be waiting for is a custom cooled version, as the stock ATI coolers are pants IMO.

the 3870 and 4870 were never £300 even on day 1 of release with ocuk/scans super inflated price- will be much closer to £200

I hope you are right, but I feel that as there won't be any Dx11 competition for 3-4 months and as there hasn't been any significant step forward in graphics cards over the last 6 months, ATI can almost charge what they want.

exactly. ati released the 3850 and 4850 under intense competition from nvidia so they had to undercut the competition significantly to get noticed. this time they are pretty much on par in performance with nvidia so ati can have a bit more flexibility to charge high prices.

You are probably not far off with idle temp, but the card alone uses far less than 150W on idle. Lot of reviews print system consumption.
