Ti4200 64mb vs 128mb
there are a few ti4200's appearing on ebay at the mo which I'm rather tempted by (my old gf2 is not coping with current game releases!), but not sure which one to go for as some are 64mb ones and some are 128mb ones. now, i know it sounds silly, but i'm sure i read somewhere that the 64mb cards can and do exceed the performance of the 128 cards...is this wrong - logic dictates that 128 should be better but as is often the case (i.e. certain radeons) a 'lesser' card often does much better that its superiors...
please help me decide :)

The early batch of GF4's used to have the memory clocked higher on the 64meg models. However, pretty soon after, 128 became the standard on the cards, and they gained the same clock speed.
It depends on the model entirely.

often putting more memory on cards is a marketing trick - an ATI Radeon 9200 has no need for 256Mb of memory, but PC World punters have been trained that a 9800xt with a mere 128Mb of memory sucks compared to a 256mb 9200 powerhouse.
however, in this case, the 4200 range CAN make use of 128mb properly. as long as it's a later model (just get one with AGP8X) with full speed memory, anyway

I know you have probably looked at the option, but why dont you wait a bit till the new ati's come out and then get an r9800 pro for about £100?
As if you get a gf4 ti4200 it will start to get bad pretty soon e.g. with far cry, and doom3/hl2 due for release soon.
I would say that the 64mb version actually clocks faster, but more games are using 128mb now - whereas when the ti4200 was first released 64mb was adequate.

yeah was thinking the same, recently been watching the 9800 fall, and fall, and fall...
and yeah, i'm no fool when it come to realising that 9200 at 256 is poo...well, it could do nice toast but you'd never get the full course meal. why do those punks at pc world over price and mislead people? i guess they get away with it I suppose. shameful.

Dont be too harsh on the sale staff though. Im told they get less than an afternoons training! They are just regular sales people, some with no intrest in computing at all, obviously ;)
I did notice the other day that my local branch is selling lovely standard 9800's at just £200 bargain i thought :D

Sweet spot in terms of most FPS for your money would be 9800pro or fx5900 and the 9800pro can be had for £108+vat alot less than £200. What sort of price are Ti4200 going for on ebay?

ti4200's going, at first point, for £25-£30 hence why I felt they were bargains but perhaps I'll hold on until 9800's drop a bit more. incidentally will the trashing of all those memory chips (reason for recent memory price hike) affect the price of graphics cards at all?
