Will the 5870 drop in price over the next 2 months?
I had a nightmare of a time with my GFX cards which have recently been returned to the suppliers with a full refund after a few months. Alas, these have now been returned and my main machine is out of action for a couple of months because I’m waiting for the price of the 5870 to drop.
I used to be one of those people who have already splashed out over £600.00 for two cards and not bothered to wait for a month or two. I have learned over the years to wait a while and watch the price drop and reap in the reward of paying less money. We all recall the price drop of the 4890 which dropped quite a way after a few weeks; I predict the 5870 will drop within the first couple of weeks of sales. Demand is very high for this card at the moment and will continue throughout Oct – Nov and I predict will go down by at least £20.00 - £30.00 and possibly £50.00 by the end of Nov bringing it down to £258.00. Are my predictions inane... no in fact I’m probably on the ball but even if they drop £30.00 I would be happy?
What do you think? :undecided

It'll drop when nVidia release a competitor to it.
Re: Will the 5870 drop in price over the next 2 months?
They will not drop in price until a competitior (nVidia) release something to compete with it......and that looks very unlikely until next year.

By chrimbo I would expect to pay about £275. But hell, I'm no expert :)

I doubt it, I do believe these are not due until Q1 of 2010. nvidia will want to monitor the performance and sales of AMD's card first.

I can't see a price reduction until the New Year unless nVidia actually have some competing cards easily available for purchase earlier. You might get some at £299 soon though.

You're doubting what? That the price will drop when nVidia release a competitor?
nVidia aren't waiting just to monitor performance and sales. They would have beaten AMD out with a DX11 card if they could, now they have no choice but to beat AMD on either price or performance, to which AMD will then adjust their price as they have the overheads to do so.
edit: Retailers might drop additional costs for early adopters once stock levels rise and they get cards through cheaper distribution channels, but without competition it'd only be a minor adjustment.
Re: Will the 5870 drop in price over the next 2 months?
why would they drop the price? demand outstrips supply, and the competition has nothing to challenge the product. there is no commercial reason to drop the price until GT300 at least shows benchmarks, then if performance is good, price goes down.
Re: Will the 5870 drop in price over the next 2 months?
No DX11 games yet, I personally got a £110 HD4890, and will replace it in a one->two years when things are cheaper, and there is software for it. I guess in you have a 2 GPU solution or a Dual link monitor then it might be worth it, but for now, I am waiting for next Mithras day not the one comming up.

Pretty sure I saw some, think Powercolor ones, over at Novatech for under £299!
Could be wrong though!
However, I doubt prices are going to drop significantly, there's no competition at the moment for these cards, having said that I did see a GTX295 at around ~£300 at OcUK.
