    4890 noise level

I'm looking at building a new system in the next couple of weeks and a 4890 seems to give me the best bang for buck but I keep hearing about how noisy they are.

Does anyone have any experience with them?

Stock cooler isn't great but the vapor-x sapphire card is pretty awesome

    Re: 4890 noise level

I would agree with StaffsMike, my HD4890 was nice when I got it however (after a few weeks) now seems fan seems to produce a "vibratory" type sound, and setting the blow on full sounds like a hurricane. The Midrange however its quite reasonable. I am considering replacing the stock fan, but I will probably just put up with in for a year and by a DX11 card.

    Re: 4890 noise level

Advice in another bit of the forum is to plump for a 5800 instead - assuming there's no noise issue there?

    Re: 4890 noise level

I think the 5800 series runs cooler and therefore quieter.

The 4800 series has always had notorious noise issues, unless you get a more expensive card with a better cooler.

    Re: 4890 noise level

My only reservation with the 5800 series is the huge hike in price. If I'm getting a non-stock cooled version then I might stick with the 4890 to save some cash.

    Re: 4890 noise level

The 5800's use less power and therefore produce less heat and should run quiter.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

    Re: 4890 noise level

4890 vapor X = silent and 70% of the performance of a 5850, at the cost of a few more watts and substantial savings.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

I like that summation. 4890 it is!

    Re: 4890 noise level

I bought a stock 4890 a few months back and sent it back due to noise and temps. The idea was then to buy the Vapor-X version, but decided to wait for the new 5800 cards.

Now currently waiting for the 5850 Vapor-X....I will not buy stock again...

I'd do the same if I had the cash but I really think 5800s are at a premium price at the moment.
