    More grim reading about Fermi

Yes, it's another Charlie D article which makes a pinch of salt required when reading, but if his theories are correct it really does look like ATI are going to have little to worry about for a while:

    http://www.semiaccurate.com/2010/02/...-and-unfixable

Meanwhile, ATI are expected to release a faster Evergreen card titled "Trillian" that is effectively a tuned 5870:

    http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/17720/1/

I've been waiting for ages for the price of 5870's to drop and it looks like my wait could be extended yet again.

I can now see why nVidias undercover PR fool was so desperate to try and put people off of buying ATI cards while waiting for Fermi......

I can see the 5xxx series being even more successful then the 4xxx series, good times ahead or AMD it seems.

A "limited edition" card with less than 9000 produced that will most likely break during use and will cost more than a 5970, yet, perform worse.......

Break during use? Not sure where you got that from. It does sound like a poorly executed design, but I would expect any chips that get onto board to give a long (if toasty) service.

The Nvidia call for the fab to fix the VIA problems mentioned in the Anand article does make it sound like Nvidia have no handle on this problem at all though which does not bode well. Time to try out the ATI Linux drivers, looks like my next card is going to be another ATI.

Re: More grim reading about Fermi

Not all doom and gloom at fudzilla they are discussing the coolers; although they do seem pro green:-

    "Higher TDP, but similar noise

We got some word that Nvidia's upcoming Fermi-based Geforce GTX 480 single GPU card should be as hot as the GTX 285. These are still preliminary results, as Nvidia still has to send out the final cards with the final coolers, but this looks like slightly better result that the GTX 480 that we saw at CES 2010.

The TDP of the GTX 480 will end up higher than on GTX 285, but with the help of a good cooler the thermals should be very close.

The noise lever should also be very comparable and the card should not end up much noisier than GTX 285. We heard numerous times that GTX 480 will end up with different cooler than the one we saw at CES 2010 and that was showed to Nvidia's loyal press at Editor Days.

All in all, you won't burn your fingers on the GTX 480, but it won't be cold either."

BTW how come Rollo has been banned? Apart from a bit of contrivursy he was not openly rude.

Wandering off topic - what was the final straw that got everyone's favourite fanboy banned in the end? I *almost* miss his propaganda.

Fudo's article is fluff, nvidia will have told him to write a good news piece and this is as good as he feels he can get away with. "it will have a good cooler"

Thinking back to the Anand article, that did mention for the via doubling the fact that the vias could fail after initial testing.

So it could fail during use. Sorry, my bad

this is true, aftermarket > stock just about every time, so nvidia could always get Arctic cooling or someone to make one for them, its going to be an expensive card anyway so another £5 cost isnt going to be a disaster, but another 5800 style hairdryer would be

Actually stock coolers is one area nvidia has tended to be very good on and ati weak on.

Re: More grim reading about Fermi

By the time Fermi comes out... ATI/AMD will be out with their 2nd gen DX.11 GPU's and twice as powerful than last years models... I guess... Just "my opinion"....

Tho, I do like Nvidia driver support better than ATI/AMD.... Present Card GTS-250 but wanna BUY an HD 5770 with Free Dirt 2 game. £120.

Yes, if I had the capital I would buy the HD 5870 but I do NOT...at present, as Im in the middle of a project...

    Thanks for the thread man...
