Nice - but as someone said at 315mm long, it's not much use if it won't fit in the case !
Society's to blame,
Or possibly Atari.
It'll fit mine!! Gieeefff!
And 315mm long is nothing compared to the first HDD controllers and NICs I had lol

intresting why didn't ati just stick with the x2 suffix that makes more sense than renameing it 5970

Sorry photobucket links broken
The picture of the card looks highly photoshopped to me. The plastic and the surface it's sitting on mysteriously changes shade part way along.
Pros:
1. Fastest card, period.
2. DX11
3. EyeFinity for those who care.
Cons:
1. Crossfire driver support still lacking due to ATi's lackluster dev relations and refusal to open up profiles.
2. No CUDA, PhysX, 3d Vision. (Note: Played "Phobos" level of UT2004 the other night in "Invasion" mode, still think 3d Vision is the most amazing thing to hit PC gaming- just breathtaking.)
3. Large, but I imagine most who would buy it have full tower cases.
Crossfire was never an issue with the 4870x2.......when I got mine I set AI to advanced in the CCC and it's been silky-smooth in all games.....including the one which everyone says is terrible for CF: WoW. Hopefully, they implement dual GPUs in the same manor with the HD5970.
CUDA, Physx.....if you want/need them that badly you can do what I have done and throw a very cheap 8600GTS in your machine for it.......if you afford the HD5970, then you can afford a £40 secondary card as well
3D Vision is personal taste....all pseudo-3D effects make me sick after a short while, I am sure there are plenty of others in the same boat, plus the monitor restriction is too much of a limiting factor AFAIC.....I'd prefer Eyefinity for the panaramic view instead in a lot of games......although I would like the option of using 3D for FPSes, it's just too expensive for a (relatively) small screen for such a small amount of my gaming time. Obviously, depending on the types of games you play and wether you are effected by the effect, 3D Vision could be a killer feature.
As for the size.....I recon it will fit in most ATX cases. Maybe in some cases you might have to forgo the use of a drive bay...but I would be shocked if it didn''t fit in the majority of non-SFF cases out there.
Hanging on at the moment for this to release, plus the equivilent nVidia card before deciding on which I will go for.....next card has to last me 2 years though![]()

Actually Crossfire is often an issue for new games. Check out the AnandTech article on on Far Cry2, or Google the "Shoot'em Up" catalyst release and you'll see that popular games often don't launch with profiles and that it takes ATi varying amounts of time to get the issues fixed and a profile added. With SLi drivers users can create their own profiles and force any SLi method.
This isn't true. Vista users can't have dual drivers. There is no supported method of doing this in Windows 7 or XP.
I've shown 3d Vision to many people over the last 10 months+, only one complained of eyestrain. 95% of the reviews say they don't have problems with it either. Your "comparatively small" screen is less than 10% smaller than what I'd imagine many gamers are using these days- 24" monitors. Not a large difference at all. I've actually had my 30" 3007WFP-HC gathering dust next to the 22" for over 10 months now because once you start gaming in real 3d, it's hard to go back.
This is a good strategy if you don't need to upgrade now. My guess is a lot of people don't given how proficient last gen was at 19X10.
One of the Hexus reviewers (probably Tarinder) suggested that it didn't make a lot of sense that the 4850 X2 was quicker than the 4870 but had a "lower" model number... apparently ATI agreed! This way a 5950 will be quicker than, and have a higher model number than, the 5870.
Definitely puts a kaibosh on us seeing an "official" 5770 X2 though, I guess... ;(
You can certainly have both ATI and NVidia cards playing alongside each other on Windows 7. My understanding is that NVidia have found some way of gimping the card so PhysX doesn't work properly if it figures out there's an ATI card in the mix too, but that's hardly ATI's fault, is it...
From personal experience with both technologies....I cannot say that CF suffers any more then SLI....in fact, I had considerably more issues with SLI then I ever have with my 4870x2.....and don't forget, the 4870x2 is not crossfire as such, hense probably why there is less issues with it....so my statement stands....if they implement dual GPU in the 5970 in the same manor as the 4870x2, it will probably be smooth sailing.
Supported or not, it's doable as long as you don't have Vista. Maybe nVidia will stop being childish soon and remove the stupid lockout in their drivers so that we don't need to use a 3rd party patch to do this with the newer drivers. nVidia really need an anti-competition lawsuit over this IMO.This isn't true. Vista users can't have dual drivers. There is no supported method of doing this in Windows 7 or XP.
How long did those people sit there and play with it before declaring them uneffected?I've shown 3d Vision to many people over the last 10 months+, only one complained of eyestrain. 95% of the reviews say they don't have problems with it either.
How did you get the figure of 95% of reviewers? How long did these "95% of reviewers" use the feature for?
No, not such a large difference but you did tactfully disregard my comment about cost......when you have spent recently on a 24"+ screen, buying another more expensive and smaller screen, is a major put-off and a cost implication most do not want to consider. It just doesn't seem cost effective unless you are in the market for a new screen and 22" is fine for you.....or you must have a pseudo-3d feature "at any cost"....even when that feature is hard to get a demo of before spending out on a highend nvidia gfx card and expensive 22" screen to get the feature to work.Your "comparatively small" screen is less than 10% smaller than what I'd imagine many gamers are using these days- 24" monitors. Not a large difference at all.
Wow, you can game in real 3d? There was me thinking 3d vision was a pseudo 3d mind trickI've actually had my 30" 3007WFP-HC gathering dust next to the 22" for over 10 months now because once you start gaming in real 3d, it's hard to go back.
Regardless, you obviously bought the wrong monitor to begin with. Most people do not buy the 30" Dell for 100% gaming....they normally purchase it for productivity reasons and then use it for gaming instead of having a second screen....especially when the 30" screen takes up so much room.
So, the only downside (IMO) is the lack of the 3d feature, something that is VERY niche at the moment......and lets face it, on a 22" screen you won't need such a beastly gfx card anyway, so those who have bought into the 3d vision tech should not feel the need to upgrade to this card anyway.

Seriously - that is one poorly 'shopped "board". I bet the actual version isn't as long as that.
I find your lack of faith disturbing
A couple of months ago there were photos kicking around of an AMD exec holding one of these things (I'm pretty sure there's a Hexus article about it), and it really *is* that long.
EDIT: one quick search later...
