    Re: Any info in release for the 5870 x2 ?

    I wish they would just call it the 5870X2. So much easier to explain to people "See, it's 2 of the 5870s in one card!"

    Re: Any info in release for the 5870 x2 ?

    i can see the advantages of doing it this way though, its stops the feeling of "its just 2 of the 5870s in one card" and it makes it stand on its own a bit more, at least conceptually

    doesn't help us though, i agree the x2 was more "to the point"

    And a 5970 is clearly better than a 5890, whereas it's not obvious that a 4870 X2 outperforms a 4890.

    Couple of possibilities :

    1) Isn't the 5890 running a lower clock than the 5870? Thus it's not actually 5870 x2 (even allowing for the fact you don't get 100% scalability with two of the same GPUs in one card)

    2) Isn't driver support for all X2 and crossfire configurations generally inferior to that of single card setups? Hiding this fact might be an advantage.

    No. It won't be. And yes, defintely, the 5890 is NOT a 5870X2. I tease, sorry. {INSERT ASSUMPTION THAT HE MEANS THE 5970}

    The scalablity is something like 98% with Crossfire now. So it's enough for Joe Average to see and understand as "twice as fast as a single card", and yes, they are underclocked, but not enough for people to notice. And that is only to reduce heat output, with a non reference colour or water cooling you could work your magic on the chips if you so wished.

    No. It isn't. The problems you are refering to are games that do not support SLi or Crossfire because games actually require indepdent modules outside of Direct to support multi-GPU scaling. Inexpensive process actually, and I think DX10 added native support for multiGPUs anyway. Hydria is an attempt to remove this restriction so the computer only sees one GPU when in Hydra mode, but it's not released just yet, not to mention is scales a lot better than SLi or CF do.

    Re: Any info in release for the 5870 x2 ?

    I'd go with around 550 as well if it was released today.....but that because you can expect it to be roughly:

    (5870 price x 2) - 10%

    So, as the 5870 drops in price, so will the expected street price of the 5970

    Read on the amd ati forums apparently late December, aiming for a x-mass release, however most likely we won't see it become available until early jan 2010. But there's still time for that x-mass release, so you never know

    Wonder if the x2 will be heat hog like it's baby bro the 4890x2 was.

    Kinda pointless releasing a card that's worth more than most pc systems imo....
